Sega will start "aggressively" porting games from its back catalogue to Steam, due to the strength of digital PC sales during the COVID-19 lockdown.
The Japanese publisher's Entertainment Contents division -- which includes video games -- was the sole performer in an otherwise dismal Q1, as the global pandemic's impact on arcades, pachinko parlours and holiday resorts dragged on its bottom line.
In an investor Q&A released today, Sega said that "repeat sales" of its catalogue increased significantly in March and April this year. While that growth slowed during June and July, sales were still higher than 2019.
The key platform during that period was Steam, specifically in Europe and the US, with consumers purchasing digital games during lockdown.
Sega highlighted the performance of Persona 4: Golden, in particular, a PlayStation Vita game from 2012 that launched on Steam in June this year. Sales of the PC port were "significantly higher than expected," the company said, and that has influenced its strategy going forward.
"Going forward, we intend to aggressively promote the porting of previously launched titles to Steam and other new platforms," Sega said.
"Under such direction, we would like to take multi-platform rollout in account and prepare the PC version and others from the start."

In an official notice of resignation released by parent Sega Sammy Holdings, it states that Matsubara will leave the company as of today.

Video games were the sole bright spot for Sega in Q1, as the COVID-19 pandemic undermined every other aspect of its business.
In the three months ending June 20, 2020, the Japanese firm sold around 13 million units of video game software -- an increase of 100% over the same quarter last year, entirely driven by locked down consumers.
The key performers were Creative Assembly's Total War: Shogun 2 and Total War: Rome 2, which sold a combined 1.9 million units during the quarter. Persona 4: The Golden and Persona 5: Royal sold a combined 1.2 million units.
This contributed to the solid performance of Sega's Entertainment Contents division, which recorded a 15% decline in revenue to ¥45.1 billion ($427 million), but a 68% increase in operating profit to ¥8.2 billion ($77.6 million).
The division would have performed even better were video games not grouped alongside amusement machines, which rely on public spaces like arcades to make money.
While Sega noted arcades in key markets had started to open by the end of the quarter, "like-for-like sales" were 27.4% of the level achieved in Q1 last year.

Since Sega and Hardlight released endless runner Sonic Dash on mobile platforms in 2013, the game has remained by far the most popular Sonic mobile title, netting $10.8 million in revenue since 2014.
This is according to PocketGamer.biz, sharing data obtained from mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower. According to this data, Sonic Dash has brought in more revenue than the last five Sonic mobile games combined: Sonic at the Olympic Games, Sonic Forces, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Sonic Runners, and Sonic Jump Fever -- the latter two both now being inactive.
PocketGamer noted that this data does not include Sonic Racing, as that title is a part of Apple Arcade subscriptions.

In 1987 Sega released the great side-scrolling platform game ' Alex Kidd ' for the Sega Master System console. Although it was first released in Japan in 1986 but internationally in 1987, it was one of the most well known games as it was also built into most Master System II's. As such it came as no surprise to us, that when we mentioned it way back in 2018 way before IGN and other sites that this was game was being remade, it set our twitter feed alight with excited retro gaming retweets across the globe.

Phantasy Star Generation 4 is a relocalization (and for most of the story script, a retranslation) of the classic SEGA JRPG Phantasy Star IV.
Integrating fan feedback with dozens of hours of editing, the author has release a final(ish) version of the patch catering to as many player preferences as possible – along with substantial story script improvements.
1. Script versions: Choose between Recommended or “No Joke” (removes added NPC lines, some character interaction while retaining revised script).
2. Names/Items/Spells matching either the Master System original, the Playstation 2 remakes, or a hybrid of both (recommended).
Also, further PS fan resources and a new podcast series with interviews of PS fan translators are located at the project website.
Coinciding with SEGA’s 60th anniversary, 2020 has seen the release of major retranslations/QOL improvements to PS1, PS3, and PS4 already. Revised editions of the Playstation 2 “Generations” remakes are in production, as well.

An English translation for Sega’s 1991 Mega Drive/Genesis strategy game Bahamut Senki – and its accompanying 112-page instruction manuals – has been released!
For 2,000 years did the peace brought to Bahamut by the royal line of Pholia last; but no more. The skies darken, the evil powers once banished return, calamities tear the land itself asunder – and the “Age of Darkness” is at hand. As the world crumbles, eight rulers raise armies and war amongst themselves to decide the fate of the continent. None can say when or how the Age of Darkness will end, but amidst the chaos, there is one certainty: that the conflict can be done only when one Master stands alone above them all…
Bahamut Senki (Record of the Bahamut War) is a 1991 turn-based strategy game by Sega for the Mega Drive. In it, up to four players take control of one of eight rulers in the fantasy realm of Bahamut, raise armies, and battle AI opponents and each other until one faction emerges victorious. It’s a very complex and advanced game for its time, featuring three rulesets of varying depth, adjustable difficulty, and three different levels of simulation: high-level political management, tactical battles (in both hex-based and simplified variants), and real-time action-based combat between individual units.
While the game itself contains only a moderate amount of text, it’s a complex simulation game from an era where in-game help and tutorials were rare. Instead, most information on how the game actually works is found only in its 64-page instruction manual and accompanying 48-page supplement. Since the game is nearly impossible to understand without them, the translation team has additionally translated both manuals and formatted them as web pages, including translated reproductions of all charts and graphs, for convenience. They are included in the patch download, and can also be read online on the patch’s support site: http://stargood.org/trans/bahamut.php
The game also has a few unusual secrets for a strategy game of this type. Since some of them are extremely well hidden, and in some cases had never been documented in English, the patch download also includes instructions on how to find them.
This release was the work of TheMajinZenki (translation), Supper (hacking and manual digitization), cccmar (editing and testing), Xanathis (testing), and Oddoai-sama (testing). Special thanks to filler, who initially worked on the translation, and to Sega wiki Sega Retro for providing the user manual scans.

The Game Gear turns 30 this year, and Sega is marking the occasion with the release of a new retro offering, the Game Gear Micro.
Set for Japanese release October 6, the Game Gear Micro will come in four different colors, each with a different selection of games. Sega says the overall unit will be 40% smaller than the original Game Gear, with a roughly one-inch screen.
Each version of the Game Gear Micro will sell for ¥4,980 (about $46 or £36). Those who preorder all four colors will also be able to purchase a "Big Window" magnifying attachment to make the action easier to see.

SEGA of America hosted a special livestream recently, the first Sonic Official stream of this year, where some of their team discussed Sonic-related news. Aaron Webber was there to answer questions from fans in the chat, with one of the most popular ones being why it's been so long since there was a new Sonic game announcement or reveal trailer. Webber's response was that SEGA used to release Sonic titles on a yearly basis, but the company decided that they no longer wanted to rush games out, and made the choice to give each game a longer development cycle. He also says that the team is incredibly excited about what's in store, but they can't say anything more at this time. The last time a mainline 3D console Sonic the Hedgehog game released was Sonic Forces, back in 2017.

eskayelle’s ultimate vision comes to fruition with this final set of mods in the TMNT of Rage series.
On an alternate timeline in an alternate universe, Mr. X and the Syndicate have fallen at the hands of those radical reptiles, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Furious with his latest failure to control the city, X enlists one Oroku Saki to capture the fearsome foursome’s greatest ally, April O’Neil.
Rage in their hearts and pizza in their bellies, the turtles jump into action, dead set on putting an end to Mr. X’s tyranny once and for all… and punish the Shredder for being complicit in the Syndicate’s nefarious misdeeds as well.
A direct descendant of eskayelle’s TMNT of Rage hack and its TMNT Remix successor, this mod adds the following to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of Rage experience:
- A throwback to the old 90’s arcade splash screens starts off your gaming experience.
- A six sequence ending specific to this game, the first for any SoR2 hack out there, incorporates redesigned images from the classic TMNT II and III NES games. These images also put some artistic spins on the palettes / color schemes for a bit of extra fun.
- Those bumbling buffoons, those moronic mutants, Rocksteady and Bebop, have now joined the Syndicate! Dumber than advertised, but stronger than ever, get ready to go toe to toe with them, Bebop making his first appearance in a Genesis / Mega Drive game.
- An updated story in attract mode complements the new ending sequence.
- A new title screen takes greater advantage of the Genesis / Mega Drive’s palette options.
- Thanks to Yoni, gone are road apples in favor of a nice slice! Try not to smile the first time you hear Mikey calling out “Pizza Time!” as he grabs some grub.
- With the additional Re-Shelled patch, play the game on a Terraonion MegaSD (or with any emulator that supports MD+ functionality) to enjoy that sweet soundtrack from eskayelle’s TMNT MD+ Remix. Grab that soundtrack here!
And… those fantastic features from the previous mods in the series continue to kick shell!
Grab a copy of the patch today! And… check out the hacking blog here!

An English ‹translation› for the Game Gear’s first ‹RPG›, Eternal Legend, has been ‹released›.
‹Legend› tells of the ‹lost city› of ‘Millennium’, a golden ‹paradise› created to praise the ‹gods›. It is said that the bearer of the eight [Golden Knives] shall open the way to ‘Millennium’ and its long-lost ‹treasures› and ‹technology›. One day, «Arwyn», a young ‹treasure hunter›, unexpectedly finds himself caught up in the ‹search› for ‘Millennium’. In a ‹journey› spanning the entire ‹world›, «Arwyn», together with companions «Ryall» and «Blue Moon», must solve ‹mysteries› and uncover ‹conspiracies› from across the ages in order to learn the ‹secret› of ‘Millennium’…
Eternal Legend is a 1991 RPG developed by Japan Art Media for the Sega Game Gear. It’s a very orthodox RPG notable mostly for being the very first one on the Game Gear. It features vast overworlds based on real-world continents, a simple monster summoning mechanic, and a highly idiosyncratic system of ‹text bracketing›.
As the first RPG on the console, the game is unfortunately a bit primitive in some respects. In an attempt to make it slightly more palatable to modern players, the translation also includes a complete game walkthrough and provides optional cheats to speed up movement and prevent random encounters, though players interested in the original experience can forgo these if they prefer.
This patch was the work of TheMajinZenki (translation), Supper (hacking), and cccmar (editing and testing). The authors hope that you’ll enjoy the game, despite all ‹obstacles›.

Japanese publisher Sega has released its full-year financial results, showing growth across the board.
The publisher reported net sales of ¥366.6 billion ($3.4 billion) for the 12 months ended March 31, 2020 -- up 10.5% year-on-year.
Operating income rose 111.3% to ¥27.6 billion ($257.8 million), while profit attributable to parent was up 421% to ¥13.8 billion ($128.9 million).
In the Entertainment Contents segment, which handles its video games business, sales were reported as ¥247.7 billion ($2.3 billion), up nearly 13% from the previous financial year.
Operating income for this business was reported as ¥14.8 billion ($138.3 million), up 51% year-on-year.
While digital games were largely to thank for this growth -- a trend Sega notes is continuing amid the COVID-19 pandemic -- the publisher also reported a "significant increase" in packaged games sales.
Over the course of the year, 26.7 million boxed games were sold, up from the 23.4 million shifted in the previous financial year. Packaged games sales generated ¥78.2 billion ($730.5 million), showing year-on-year growth of 43%.
In fact, packaged games were comfortably the largest revenue source for Sega's Entertainment Contents business, followed by amusement machine sales at ¥51.1 billion ($477.3 million) and digital games at ¥47.2 billion ($440.9 million).
By comparison, packaged games were second largest segment for this part of the business last year, just ¥1 million behind amusement machines at ¥54.6 million ($510 million).
