Back in 1995, a handful of gaming giants united to create the global trade show E3.
At the heart of its creation was Sega, which had run a number of events in the years prior.
So it was very much the end of an era when Sega announced it wouldn’t have its own booth at E3 this year.
“You go to E3 to show products,†explains Sega Europe’s SVP of commercial publishing. John Clark.
“Some people have been saying: ‘it’s a shame that Sega isn’t showing anything at E3, but I went to the stand last year and there was nothing to look at’.
“We don’t have a huge array of games coming out that are relevant to E3 this year. We have made the brave decision, and certain press may pick up on that. We’re focusing on our content roadmap, and it’s strong going forward. It’s just not aligned to E3 this year.â€
E3 has been heavily linked to the console world. Sega’s heritage is in consoles, of course, but in recent years this has switched to PC, with the likes of Total War, Alien, Company and Heroes and Football Manager. The latter of which is approaching 10m sales on PC.
“We have always viewed PC as a core part of our business,†Clark says. “For us, the PC market is about franchise, and franchise development. So to have four really strong PC IP is incredible. We have enjoyed working hard with the studios to benefit from the growth of Steam, as well as the growing number of consumers who are buying PCs.
“The market has grown, but it’s not a market we can lay figures on. If you had to look across the share of a multi-format game, like Alien Isolation, you’d be really surprised with the size of the PC contribution. In the same breath we can talk about PC with PS4 and Xbox One.â€
Of course, PC is a heavily digital market. But unlike other PC specialists, Sega still values physical retail.
“Our role within the games ecosystem is making sure consumers can access content wherever they want to, however they want to,†Clark insists. “Physical retail plays an important role in that.
“Retail has made a point of saying that physical PC is still relevant, and retail is still relevant in the PC market. As long as retail is supporting PC, we’ll be supporting retail.
“There are certainly unique selling points to the High Street channel that you don’t get online. This includes the ability for people to pay with cash, earn loyalty points, and trade-in games. These are unique points that only the High Street can offer. So it’s important we keep talking to and working with retail.â€
"New IP is a challenge for everyone.
People are playing games for longer,
so it’s harder to get attention." John Clark, Sega Sega is rightly proud of the strong sales in its Alien, Total War and Football Manager franchises. But what about some new concepts?
“New IP has been a challenge for everybody for the last ten years,†Clark explains. “The success that people have had is from franchises that have been built up over time that require a lot of investment. And Sega is no different.
“We’ll dip our toe in the water and look at new IP, like [Game Freak’s upcoming title] Tembo The Badass Elephant. But we are looking to broaden our offering as well, whether that’s through Sega creating its own idea, or looking at what projects are being created externally with other studios. We are actively looking at new studios and projects. If the opportunity is there we’ll certainly support it.â€
He continues: “Launching new IP is hard. Consumers are buying games and spending more time with them, so it’s difficult to break in with a new IP. It’s been a long time since it’s been easy to launch a new game. People aren’t buying two new titles and moving on, they’re buying a game and playing it for a year, playing multiplayer, and purchasing extra content.
“The length of the gameplay has been extended. There isn’t the same scale of purchase opportunities that there were five years ago.â€

The long-awaited sequel to the iconic Dreamcast franchise Shenmue is really happening. Shenmue 3, unveiled by series visionary Yu Suzuki at Sony's E3 press conference, has already hit $2 million on Kickstarter. It's almost certainlya crowdfunding record, and means fans will get to play as Ryo once more on their PS4 and PC. Given that Sega doesn't have an E3 booth this year, the game's revival is certainly a shock to fans. The original titles were cult classics on Sega's last console, but many assumed the publisher had given up on a third entry. The company is a little busy developing Sonic and Angry Birdscrossover games for mobile, after all. That's why it wasn't surprising to hear that in order to fund a third entry, the Shenmue team is striking out on its own. The Kickstarter campaign is essentially an open challenge to fans: You say you've always wanted this game, now prove it.

This week return with another remastered edition of one of our previous releases. As always, every single page has been re-examined and cleaned up where needed. Afterwards this process is completed, we take the lossless TIF files and run them through a batch converter to create high quality jpg images. The new setting that we have implemented make sure that the oversaturated and overly-bright look of the previous release of this issue remains in the past. To get a bit more details on this process, click the following link, which also contains a couple of before/after short.

Could Shenmue 3 be released on Xbox One? That all depends on how you interpret a new addition to the game’s Facebook page.
As added to the FAQs today: “Currently we are planning development only for PC (Windows) and PS4. Other platforms have not been decided yet. If other platform versions were added as rewards, an announcement would be made on the update page.â€
This statement has led to some speculation that were the game to hit a certain unspecified goal on Kickstarter, Xbox One could be added as a platform. This seems unlikely, surely, seeing as Sony is helping to develop it.
The game’s FAQ has also added some more detail about its funding, questions of which were asked last week.
“No, we cannot make an open world game for $2m,†it now says. “Shenmue will be produced using both the funds raised from the Kickstarter and through other funding sources already secured by Ys Net Inc. We are very sorry, but due to contractual obligations, details of outside investments will not be disclosed.â€
Speaking in a Reddit AMA, Suzuki also confessed that in his mind $10m is the magic crowdfunding goal that will allow him to fulfil all of his ambitions for the title.
“I will say this: if we reach the $5m mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality,†he confessed. “At $10m, it will truly have the features of an open world.â€
Shenmue 3 currently stands at $3,524,474 on Kickstarter.

First of all there is a small update in the Links section, a guide to making a simple but effective tray for Rhea has been added. That tray goes under Rhea and prevents dropped SD cards from going deep into Saturn internals, so quite handy.
Now as for promised preorders, I’m about to open them now but as I explained I might have to close soon after if I’m swamped with emails. But fear not, this should actually prevent situations like before where you had to wait more than a month for your unit. I know many of you won’t like this on/off thing but I have to manage the production somehow and the last two ideas for that were not so good after all.
Unfortunately I’m very busy again but I’m planning to test something this weekend, hopefully it’ll work and I’ll have something new to show in few days.

It’s internal codename is Phoebe but I’m probably going to name the final product Theia. And in case you’re still confused – it’s a 21-pin ODE for SEGA Saturn.
It’s not perfect though – you won’t be able to play CD+G discs. Well, audio will play but that’s it. Shouldn’t be a problem as those discs are rare and proper dumps even more so, but it’s a pity as I was able to get it working on Rhea. On the bright side I did get as close as possible with it and the results are very promising for PCE, which uses a very similar subcode protocol.
Before you start asking – it’s not for sale yet. There are several variants of the 21-pin drive and the device must be first tested with each one. That’ll take time.

When the word got out that Shenmue 3 was getting financial help from Sony, not just E3 stage time, some gamers understandably flipped out. Were Yu Suzuki and crew duping fans into supporting a big-budget sequel in the guise of a crowdfunded indie title? Well, you can relax a little -- Suzuki has come clean and explained to backers just how Sony and partner Shibuya Productions are involved. On top of an apology for misleading supporters, the developer notes that Sony and Shibuya are helping out with marketing, production and (in Sony's case) "some publishing." While he can't talk about the terms, he's adamant that your money is going directly to Shenmue's development. The other companies are "not seeing a cent" of your pledge, Suzuki says.
