A long-overdue English translation for the second game in the Madou Monogatari (Sorcery Saga) series has been released!
Arle Nadja, last seen trying to graduate from kindergarten in the first Madou Monogatari, is now sixteen years old. As she journeys to the distant Ancient Magic School to study, a mysterious man with a remarkable proclivity for unintentional innuendo knocks her out and throws her in a dungeon! Arle must now use all her magic skills to escape and continue her quest to become the most powerful magician in the world.
The Madou Monogatari games are a series of dungeon crawlers by Compile, originally released for Japanese computers and later ported to many other platforms. They’re known for their distinct style of magic-oriented combat, with no HP or MP meters, individually-crafted attacks for every enemy, and prolific use of voice samples. They should also look very familiar to Puyo Puyo players – Puyo Puyo began as a spinoff of Madou Monogatari and imported most of its original cast from the series.
This patch is for the Sega Game Gear port of the game, which features somewhat different gameplay and dungeons from the original computer versions. Despite the Puyo Puyo connection and a solid reputation as a fun title, this marks the first English translation of the game, almost exactly 25 years after this version’s original release.
This patch was the work of TheMajinZenki (translation), Supper (hacking), cccmar (editing and testing), filler (original script dump), and Xanathis (testing). Special thanks goes to filler and Kingofcrusher for their translation patch for the first Madou Monogatari, whose font was reused for this patch.

Two Point Studios has joined the Sega family. Sega Europe today announced that it has acquired the Farnham-based developer of Two Point Hospital.
Two Point Hospital launched last August to impressive sales and positive reviews. It was the debut title from Two Point, which was founded in 2016 by Mark Webley, Gary Carr, and Ben Hymers.
The light-hearted hospital simulation was familiar ground for Webley and Carr, who viewed the game as a spiritual successor to Theme Hospital, a title they worked on together at Bullfrog more than 20 years ago. It was intended to be the first in a franchise of simulation games sharing a similar tone and set in the fictitious Two Point County.
"It's a landmark step for Two Point Studios and we're thrilled to be joining the Sega family," Webley said. "We're looking forward to executing the next phase of our plans as we continue to evolve Two Point County. It's a hugely exciting time to be a part of Two Point and we are here today thanks to the hard work, passion and dedication of our small, but amazingly talented team here in Farnham and the incredible fans that have supported us throughout and guided our continued development of Two Point Hospital."

The director of the Sonic The Hedgehog film has promised that the character design will be changed before it is released later this year.
The first trailer for the new Sonic film was released this week, and the reaction to the design of the iconic video game character has been almost unanimously negative.
Myriad articles articulating the problems with the design have been published. The most commonly cited concern is unquestionably Sonic's teeth, which have been deemed 'too human' to sit comfortably in the character's face.
Jeff Fowler, the film's director, responded to those criticisms on Twitter, and said precisely what many Sonic fans were hoping to hear.

This week we add a brand new magazine to the catalogue.
We are proud to present you with the teaser issue for the Official Dreamcast Magazine by Dennis Publishing.
Since this is just a small A5 booklet of 28 pages with preview articles from the actual issue Zero, the Max-Rez version is only 1700 pixels wide instead of the normal 2560 pixels.
We also don't have any preview articles up for this one due to it's special nature, but the little magazine itself is available for download in full as always.
Work is already well underway for the full-sized 132 page issue zero, so with a bit of luck, that one should be out in time for the coming weekend.
Enjoy!

Sega Sammy will be reducing the number of digital games it develops after the segment fell below expectations in the last financial year.
While sales were up across its game business, grossing $1.86 billion for the year, operating income was down 33.7% to $88 million.
In 2017 Sega Sammy revealed its Road to 2020 corporate strategy. Following its annual financials ending on March 31, 2019, the Japanese games giant admitted its digital games segment had fallen "significantly below the initial plan."
The company attributed this to external factors such as a stagnant environment of top ranking games and intensified competition in the domestic market, coupled with internal factors such as a slowdown of existing mainstay titles, a lack of hits, and delay of new games.
As a result, Sega reported a $17 million loss from digital games for the period. This came despite posting a 5.9% increase in sales, grossing $366.5 million for the year.
The company also noted that it had only released eight of the planned 12 games for the period. Looking ahead to next year, Sega said it will narrow down the number of titles it develops and increase focus towards games based on existing IPs.

Sega has reorganised its European operations to bring mobile studio Hardlight closer in line with its other developers.
The publisher's European arm operates a pillar structure that concentrates on the output of Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive, Relic Entertainment and Amplitude Studios. Now Sega Hardlight will become the fifth pillar.
The studio is best known for mobile titles such as Sonic Dash and Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. It is currently working on Sonic Racing, which will be released exclusively for the upcoming Apple Arcade subscription service.
Sega has emphasised that Hardlight will continue to primarily work on mobile games after this restructure, "with a view to the industry's emerging new platforms and services" -- which sounds like more Arcade titles, plus whatever other subscription or streaming services come to mobile.
This new position in Sega's company also means the Leamington-based team can "work across a whole range of... projects for Sega and its studios", suggesting potential collaborations with the other pillars.
To oversee this transition, Neall Jones is taking over Hardlight as studio director, stepping up from his role as development director. He has been at Hardlight for six years, prior to which he worked at Codemasters, Traveller's Tales and Eidos.

BlastEm v0.6.2 is released. BlastEm has the goal of being an extremely accurate Genesis emulator while still running on relatively modest hardware by using advanced techniques. Currently it meets neither my accuracy nor performance goals, but those goals are pretty high. Speed and accuracy should be sufficient for most purposes. It runs at full speed on an old first generation Intel Atom and can run Sonic 2 at around 600 fps on a Haswell desktop using a single core. To my knowledge, it is the only emulator besides Genesis Plus GX that can properly display the "TITAN 512C FOREVER" portion of Titan's Overdrive demo, and the only emulator besides Exodus that passes all 122 of the tests in Nemesis' VDP FIFO Testing ROM and can properly display "Direct Color DMA" demos.
BlastEm Features:
* savestates
* integrated debugger
* GDB remote debugging
* joystick/gamepad support
* Mega/Sega Mouse support
* save RAM and EEPROM support
* Sonic & Knuckles lock-on
* turbo and slow modes
* configurable low pass filter
* single pass GLSL shaders (though there are no interesting ones presently)

Yakuza spin-off Judgement sold roughly 97% of its stock following the announcement that the game would be pulled from shelves in Japan.
Publisher Sega confirmed it would halt sales of the game after it was revealed that voice actor and character model Pierre Taki was arrested on drug charges.
Speaking on the latest (translation via Gematsu), chief creative officer Toshihiro Nagoshi said: "I'm bummed that it sold like there was a last-minute surge in demand.
"It reached number three on Amazon's sales rankings. But I did kind of think, "Why didn't you just buy from the start?" Of course I'm glad in any case."
The decision to pull Judgement was taken "fairly quickly" said Nagoshi, who conceded there was "no correct way to deal with the situation."

Yakuza spin-off Judgment has been pulled from shelves in Japan after one of its performers was arrested over allegedly using cocaine.
In a statement, Sega said that "for the time being" it will halt both digital and retail sales of the game while it confirms the facts and decides what how to proceed. The publisher apologies for any inconvenience to its customers and partners.
The decision follows the arrest of Pierre Taki -- who plays a character in Judgment -- as reported by Japanese news site Mainichi, spotted by Kotaku. The 51-year-old actor admitted to using a small amount of cocaine, the penalty for which can be up to seven years in prison.
Authorities searched his car and home last night but, according to Nippon, found no cocaine. However, Taki's urine sample tested positive for cocaine after his arrest.
Judgment was released back in December, with a localised version due to launch in the West this June. GamesIndustry.biz has contacted Sega to find out if these plans have been affected.
Kotaku notes that the publisher has even started deleting tweets about Judgment while it considers its next move.
In addition to his role in Judgment, Taki is also the Japanese voice of Olaf from Disney's Frozen -- a character he most recently played in Kingdom Hearts III. There is currently no word on whether Square Enix is planning a similar cessation of sales.
