Series creator Yu Suzuki has said that he can’t promise 60fps performance in Shenmue 3, although he seems he can guarantee that its female characters will be sexually attractive.
“For the moment, I’m thinking about 30 frames per second,” he told DualShockers when asked about the game’s PS4 framerate. “60 might be too difficult, but I’m not sure yet.”
However, while Suzuki cannot confirm how the game will appear technically, he is ensuring that visually it will tick certain boxes.
“They are being improved,” he replied when asking about changes to early character model prototypes. “The person who originally created Shenhua, is collaborating with us on her character. Thanks to him, Shenhua is looking a lot cuter.
“There will be many new characters. There are the four main bosses. There will be Lan Di from the previous games, and two more fighters. The fourth, on the other hand is a strategist, and she will using more cunning than head on fighting. She is an extremely beautiful and sexy, but cruel woman.”
And then when asked about romance in the game, the developer added: “Yes, it will be an important topic in Shenmue III, and I will try to portray the differences in how men and women think in the game.”
Suzuki then went on to admit that he himself isn’t really a gamer.
“I don’t really play other games, because if you play games it’s too easy to be influenced by them, and even if it is unintentional, one ends up losing their originality. On the other hand, I’m watching movies,” he admitted.
The difference in approach to both female representation and wider equality issues between Eastern and Western game developers is not only widening but increasingly being brought into focus.
While games such as Metal Gear Solid, Tekken, Tomodachi Life and Dead or Alive find themselves clashing with modern Western values, American and European developers such as Blizzard,EA, Ubisoft and NetherRealm have openly adopted a more balanced approach to gender representation and sexual orientation, no doubt spurred by the efforts of vocal critics such as Anita Sarkeesian.
Last month UK industry veteran Andy Payne said that there was no longer any excuse for the sector’s inequality blind spot. And Japanese companies should not go completely without praise, withSony and Square Enix in particular making some very positive moves in the right direction.
It was revealed yesterday that the Western release of Wii U title Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water will ditch the skimpy costumes found in the Japanese release in favour of less revealing Nintendo-themed clothing.

Developer Yu Suzuki has said that the game’s $6,333,295 Kickstarter total is not enough for him to do everything he wanted with Shenmue 3.
"I could do with a bit more money,” he told Eurogamer. “The game itself doesn't have to be gorgeous visually – a lot of the money these days goes into the graphics. If we perhaps compromise on the graphics and put more into the story, we can make a good game. The most important thing, to me, is that the game's interesting, and that it's something people want to play."
Prior to the completion of the game’s Kickstarter, Suzuki suggested that $10m was the number he thought would allow him to achieve his vision. While the crowdfunding drive fell short of this, however, it has become clear that the game is also receiving investment from elsewhere, although the specifics of this remain vague.
One thing we do now know is that Sony is, as has been previously suggested, contributing to the game financially.
"Kickstarter's not the only source of money. There's also funding from Sony and Shibuya Productions,” Suzuki added. “Before we started Kickstarter, we had goals set around the budget – so if we only got $6m, we'd create Shenmue 3 based upon what we could do with that $6m.
“We're still trying to gather funds. Obviously, the more money we have the more we can do. Even if we don't get as much budget as the previous games, we'll still make this game."
Indeed, last month Ys Net launched a second crowdfunding drive for the game directly via PayPal. Shenmue 3 still has a Christmas 2017 release date.

Sega is set to offer 200 employees ‘voluntary retirement’ as it aims to improve profitability.
The publisher expects to make a loss of £9.85m for the second quarter of the 2015 financial year. It has put much of this down to the delay of the release of its new pachislot and pachinko titles and to money set aside for early retirements. It stated however that the reduction of expenses resulting from losing staff could save it £10.9m a year starting from March 2016.
It has adjusted its operating income expectations for the first half of the current fiscal year ending September 30th to £32.8bn yen from £76.6m, a fall of 57 per cent.

Developer Ys Net has embarked on yet another crowdfunding campaign for RPG sequel Shenmue 3.
The game has already raised $6,333,295 Kickstarter, but the studio has opened what it calls a ‘Slacker Backer’ period designed to encourage those who didn’t pledge first time around to add their cash to the pile.
“There are so many people told us they could not pledge on Kickstarter, or could not make the deadline, and have asked for a PayPal page for another opportunity to contribute to Shenmue III,” the studio said.
“The Slacker Backer period will continue through December 31st. While the full game will be completed as promised with the use of the funding collected on Kickstarter, any additional funding collected here will go towards reaching the Stretch Goals to make the game even bigger and deeper.
“The three month window was set to allow a long enough time to for everyone who wants to support Shenmue III to do so, but short enough to keep the release date on track. The PayPal page will feature a selection of rewards from the Kickstarter campaign including the Trial Version and the Collector’s Edition.”
Shemue 3’s Kickstarter total made it the highest ever funded video game and the third highest funded ‘games’ project behind card game Exploding Kitten ($8,782,571) and the Ouya Android console ($8,596,474). It also became the sixth highest Kickstarter total of all time.
Previous to that it became the fastest game to hit $1m on the service, taking only one hour and 42 minutes, and the fastest to hit $2m, which it achieved in just over nine hours.

Our Kickstarter is going on! While we have Nintendo 3DS and PC Steam as main goals, we also have real, physical Sega Dreamcast, SNES and PC Engine versions as stretch goal! Real 80s IP on real classic consoles!
When I was a kid, I always wanted to have a SNES game about my favorite anime series, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs. This never has happened. In 2005 I went ahead and contacted the licensor of the show and now finally we can make the game, if we reach the goals on Kickstarter. In order to give you the most accurate 16-Bit GFX experience, we are working with Simon Butler, a veteran from the good old times. He was one of the GFX guys from Ocean Software. The regular games press is laughing at us because we include real classic (homebrew) ports as stretch goals, even before PS4 and Xbox One. My first consoles were Megadrive and SNES and I want to do what nobody has done before.
Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs is an all-new 2D 16-Bit style run'n'gun shoot-'em-up including giant Mecha action, based upon the original series from 1986. Allow us to take you back in time with this original 80's IP. Power Stride and Ready to Ride! Please support us to make the real classic ports a reality. You can find us here on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...the-video-game
Let us show them, that homebrew is kicking ass!Thank you very much for supporting us.

Belgian graphic artist Vadu Amka redesigned a Sega Dreamcast, turning it into a memento of one of the most iconic games for the system: Skies of Arcadia.
The main idea was to make the system look like a heavily damaged spacecraft. Just like something from the classic, Jules Verne-inspired JRPG.I used lime wood I previously cut with a rotating cutter (called a dremel) for the hood. All the wood’s imperfections were first resealed with some light colour wood paste, then sanded stained with mahogany stain. After that, I painted it with a blue and grey colour before sanding it one more time to give it a more degraded and aged look. I waxed the hood and made it waterproof. I put inside a small grid, oxidising it with ocher pigment called « natural earth shade » (synthetic iron oxide). All the rest is an optical illusion made from several black and brown juices. What seems to be metal ring is, in fact, a leather band treated and painted with oxide paint. I used the same pattern for the gamepads slots. I finally reproduced the logo with plexiglass and remoulded it with some 2-component silicone slim before moulding it in resin and painting it.

Sales of pre-owned Dreamcast consoles have ‘gone through the roof’ since Shenmue III was announced at E3.
Indie retailers have told MCV that sales of Sega’s last console have skyrocketed since the LA-based trade show.
That’s in addition to software sales of the original two Shenmue games, as well as retro copies of Final Fantasy VII. A remake to the latter was also unveiled at E3.
“We sold 20 Dreamcasts in the last week alone,” said Alex Bowness of Canterbury’s Level Up Games. “All of sudden, people are asking where they can play the original two Shenmue games. The announcement of Shenmue III really piqued everyone’s interest.”
Reload Games Michael Wealleans added: “People are trying to get hold of the original copies of Shenmue and Final Fantasy VII, even if they don’t have the console to play it on. They
just want it in their collection. But with that demand, the price has gone up.”
David James-Turvey of Llanelli’s Retrobution adds that this renewed popularity is also driven by the fact that Sega is yet to launch HD Shenmue titles.
“Sega has really lost out on a load of digital sales by not releasing HD versions, so naturally indies like myself are the only place that would satisfy that itch to get back into these titles,” he said.
“I’ve had more customers hyped about Shenmue III than Call of Duty, and I am glad there are gamers out there like this, because it proves that gaming is not as disposable as other forms of entertainment. Indies should be confident in their physical stock.
“Dreamcast sales have come from nowhere almost, what’s exciting now is that young gamers who perhaps didn’t even know what the Dreamcast was are interested in it.”

First it was heavy rains, now it’s heat and I’m unable to do any serious assembly. I did manage to more or less finish Rhea queue but GDEMU is still lagging behind. The work has not stopped completly though, I hope to wrap it up within two weeks or so.
I will be reopening preorders for Rhea next week, probably as early as Monday. I have but a few PCBs left and the new ones haven’t even arrived yet so expect some waiting time. I will also take preorders for a small batch of Phoebe units – that is the 21-pin variant of Saturn ODE. As with every new offering consider it a higher risk item, so if you’re not comfortable with that just wait for the early bugs to be ironed out. That being said the device seems to work just fine.
Note that since there are several different variants of the 21-pin drive the ODE needs to be configured for the exact model you have. That in turn requires soldering 1 or 2 jumpers on the PCB. I might also offer to do it for you if you can provide all the necessary details but it remains to be seen if I can keep it up (and not confuse the orders for example). Plus on some units the flex cable will need to be twisted properly since SEGA changed the connector orientation – the original drives had the same problem. For the initial batch I will supply a spare cable though so it should make things easier.
On the PCE front things are less rosy, let’s just say I had another design scrapped. Might be for the better, I had some other ideas in the meantime and now I’m going to pursue those. ODE itself doesn’t look all that complicated but what I need now is a prototype unit with some extra functionality, a pass-through function if possible as well, and I have to get it right on the first try. I really don’t want to hunt down another set of connectors if I can’t unsolder these again.

Those who pre-ordered the upcoming Isotope title SLaVE today received an update on the game's progress from the GOAT store:
Quote:
Good news! After trying many things with the old code and not finding the proper fix for the bug that caused this delay, the SLaVE team decided to rewrite much of the engine code using new techniques. This will result in a better product, as some other minor issues and glitches that were not fixed in the previous code have been addressed and the game will run on the Dreamcast even better than originally planned!
We are pleased to report that the game is back to running on the Dreamcast, this time with no major show-stopping bugs.
Due to the nature of the rewrite, we still need to take a little time for additional bug testing but Jay Townsend's SLaVE is definitely closer to release!

It'd be an understatement to say that the Sonic the Hedgehog game franchise hasn't held up well over time. Sonic was once nearly as big as Mario, but a long string of bad titles (with exceptions) ruined his rep -- you're more likely to spot him in dodgy fan fiction and internet memes than a popular game. And the homebrew developers from Arcane Kids know it. They've built the Sonic Dreams Collection, a batch of tiny tribute games for Macs and Windows PCs that acknowledge the Sega mascot's fall from grace. It masquerades as a leaked set of Dreamcast protoypes, but it's really a nod to the weird places Sonic fandom has gone in the 21st century. There's a "Sonic Movie Maker" where the hedgehog calls you his dad, and "My Roommate Sonic..." well, let's just say it turns romance stories on their head.

Records, like rules, were made to be broken. Shenmue 3's Kickstarter campaign recently wrapped and upon doing so it set the bar for video-game projects on the crowdfunding platform by pulling in some $6.3 million in pledges. It's pretty impressive when you consider that just last month the previous record-holder, the Castlevania spiritual successor Bloodstained, raised over $5.5 million in a similar span of time. Both games come from legendary game developers striking out on their own (thanks to risk-averse publishers) and both are more or less the sequels fans have been asking for for years.

The 14-year wait for Shenmue fans has been a long one, but finally there is some (very early) in-game footage of Shenmue 3.
The project is approaching its final two days on Kickstarter. It currently stands at $4,972,983, meaning it has every chance of hitting the $5m village expansion and character perspective system stretch goal.
However, it now looks certain to fall short of at least 13 of the 14 subsequent stretch goals, and will almost certainly not hitthe $10m creator Yu Suzuki was targeting – although the developer later downplayed this target.
"We have come to the final three days of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter! Your support and encouragement alone have already made this project a huge success. Thank you," the Kickstarter campaign page said.
"But we are not finished yet! It is our pleasure to announce the new scene from Shenmue 3! It is still a work in progress, but Yu Suzuki has sent it with loving care and hopes it will be all that the fans of the series have come to love, and will show those new to the game some of the wonder and magic they can expect from the continually unfolding world of Shenmue."
Shenmue 3 was announced during the Sony E3 press conference. It hit its $2m goal after just 12 hours on Kickstarter, breaking a record in the process, although funding progress has since slowed considerably.

The CEO and president of Sega has admitted that it has failed its fans – but is determined to win back their trust.
“We did our best to build a relationship of mutual trust with older fans of Sega, but looking back, there’ve been some titles that have partially betrayed that [trust] in the past 10 years,” Hajime Satomi told Famitsu, as reported bySiliconera.
“Sega in the ‘90s was known for its brand, but after that, we’ve lost trust, and we were left with nothing but reputation. For this reason, we’d like to win back the customers’ trust, and become a brand once again.”
Recent releases such as Sonic’s recent Wii U and 3DS outings have been met with critical and commercial failure, with the company’s recent annual report citing a “weak” 12 months for software sales.
“I’ve been talking to the employees about how we should start putting serious consideration into quality from this point on,” Satomi added. “Especially in North America and Europe, where it’s always been more of a focus on schedules, I believe that if we can’t maintain quality, it would be better to not release anything at all.
“Since we’re seriously considering quality, I can’t make that promise for the time being, but I believe we will announce something for home console at Tokyo Game Show.”

The Shenmue series represents a milestone in the gaming industry for many fans, a point where console experiences truly took off. The first Shenmue, released in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast, was an immersive, emotional, cinematic role-playing game that expanded the definition of an action experience and pushed existing technology to its limits. A new documentary from filmmaker Adam Sipione and Fauxpop Media, A Gamer's Journey: The Definitive History of Shenmue, dives into the franchise's history and explores the recent announcement of Shenmue 3. Series creator Yu Suzuki revealedShenmue 3 and its $2 million Kickstarter on-stage during Sony's E3 2015 press conference, and nine hours later, the project had cleanly smashed that goal. Check out the teaser for A Gamer's Journey, including footage direct from Sony's E3 showcase and accompanying fan reactions, below.

How open-world will be Shenmue 3 be? Will there be a pet dog? Are there going to be Coca Cola collaborations in the game? Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki has been answering fan questions about the project via his Twitter feed, addressing a wide range of topics. While his answers are brief, some of them do shed a little more insight into Shenmue 3 and what to expect from it. Read on.Were there originally 16 chapters in the Shenmue saga or were there 11? please elaborate as to why some say 16 and some say 11.It is 11 chapters, but with branched story line, it will be more than 11.At $5 million, exactly HOW open world will Shenmue 3 be, compared to Shenmue 1/2?I’m expecting something similar to Dobuita in terms of scale. Will you be disappointed if the Kickstarter doesn’t raise $10mill for that ‘open world experience’?No I won’t. I am grateful I have another chance for a new Shenmue. I will do everything I can within the budget. Will the Tiger scroll translated by Guizang in 1 be in 3?Great idea! I will look into it.For Ryo Hazuki’s model and others, are you going to reuse models and generally assets from Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2?I don’t plan on recycling them, but will use the good parts as an reference.Would love to hear Mandarin voice acting alongside Japanese in Shenmue3. Could we make it stretch goal?Thank you, it is under consideration. Why do you think Shenmue didn’t appeal to the mass audience back then? Would it need to be ‘modernized’ for today? One reason may be there were so many new challenges. New challenges this time too. It’s the most important thing. Can we expect the return of lottery prize in Shenmue 3? May be the first prize can be a figure of Yu Suzuki!Great idea. Thanks. I will need to think about something more appealing than a figure of me.Will you research latest tech in AI so you can include it in Shenmue 3 to make it a pioneering game like its predecessors?Yes. I would like to take on some new challenge in terms of technology. Is there a possibility to film a production process for example motion capture or dubbing, during development of Shenmue 3?Yes, we have it and I would like to feature it in an update. Will Coca Cola join the Party?I’m considering collaborations with companies like Coca Cola. What’s the I.Q. score of Fukuhara-san?Maybe something like 86?What can you tell me of the three blades?Jobs using scissors, razor and knife- barber, cook, and sewer. Skills for jobs with steady demand in any era.My 10-year-old daughter wants to know if she’ll be able to use the phone at will in Shenmue 3 like she does in Shenmue 1.Look forward to it. There will be many nostalgic scenes. Maybe a tin can telephone as well?If future installments of Shenmue become a possibility will we have the option to bring over save data from Shenmue 3?I have not decided it yet.Can we expect epic fights like in Kowloon in Shenmue 2 and a similar battle fight system? There is “Battle System Expanded” Stretch Goal. It will enhance the battles, better than Shenmue 2.Will we start Shenmue 3 with some items/skills/scrolls from Shenmue 1 + 2?The platform is different, so unfortunately we can’t do it.Should we expect any Sega related stuff in Shenmue 3 like arcade games or toy capsules? There is a possibility. Were there any gameplay elements for Shenmue 1 and 2 that had to be cut due to budget constraints?Yes. I wanted the ramen noodles to get soggy and yucky, but couldn’t. I wanted to get that real. Will the “Shenmue Trial” be used for feedback to improve the game like Square Enix have with the Final Fantasy XV demo?I would definitely want to get feedback, so I’m looking into how to put a system like that in place. Will there be official Kickstarter Shenmue 3 forums to discuss and give feedback throughout the development process?I of course would like that and am looking into it.Will everything be voice acted the same way as 1 and 2? or will budget constraints not allow 100% VO all the time?Full voice will be possible if we have enough funding.I was wondering did you get Ryo Hazuki name from Ryudo Uzaki that was a Japanese musician?Nope. My question is why is not possible to use Shenmue Passport models for Shenmue 3?I’m considering about adding some functions from Shenmue Passport. Can we expect custom clothing for Ryo Hazuki? It would be great feature to able to style Ryo Hazuki as we want. There’s a feature on the $250 tier and up to change Ryo’s jacket. Other customizing under consideration. Why was the Dragon Mirror hidden under a cherry tree, a not-so-safe place like the basement?Iwao [Hazuki] thought the place under Cherry blossom tree was safer.Where did Ryo get his bandaid? It didn’t appear in Chp.1, but there was a martial arts event. The scar is from the final match. What is your favourite movie? My favourite 3 are: The Hustler, Casablanca, Roman Holiday. I love Billiards, and I still play it sometimes. Will Shenmue 3 be compatible with the project Morpheus VR headset for the ultimate second life experience?I feel that VR offers great possibilities. Will there be a pet dog in Shenmue 3?Depends on the budget.Shenmue’s core plot is basically Hamlet. Are you a Shakespeare fan and has that been an influence?Sorry, but I have not read Hamlet. I know Hamtaro though.I always wondered how Ryo , being Japanese, could communicate so easily in China. Can Ryo speak Chinese?Let’s not go there…Suzuki-san, can you please tell us some little info about Shenhua that the fans don’t already know yet?The Shenmue tree’s flower is named Shenhua. She is named after that flower. Will Ryo learn the value of forgiveness in Shenmue 3?Please play Shenmue 3 for that answer!Do you have a rough idea how many people will be in the development team for Shenmue 3?It will vary depending on the [Kickstarter] budget.Since relationships between characters will be more prominent, will we see something like a multiple choice conversation system?I am thinking about a dialogue selection system. Please confirm that guns will never be a part of Shenmue gameplay, not for Ryo or any other playable character.I am not thinking about including guns as a weapon at the moment. Will Ryo finally eat and perform other bodily functions?I don’t have plan on implementing it for Shenmue 3.Why does Ryo have a Saturn under his TV in Shenmue 1, but no games? Was Iwao using the promise of a game for it to focus Ryo? :PThat sounds about right. Let’s go with that.Mr. Suzuki, what is your favorite music to listen to?I like Jazz and Rock.Shenmue 3 is in development for PC and PlayStation 4.

When the word got out that Shenmue 3 was getting financial help from Sony, not just E3 stage time, some gamers understandably flipped out. Were Yu Suzuki and crew duping fans into supporting a big-budget sequel in the guise of a crowdfunded indie title? Well, you can relax a little -- Suzuki has come clean and explained to backers just how Sony and partner Shibuya Productions are involved. On top of an apology for misleading supporters, the developer notes that Sony and Shibuya are helping out with marketing, production and (in Sony's case) "some publishing." While he can't talk about the terms, he's adamant that your money is going directly to Shenmue's development. The other companies are "not seeing a cent" of your pledge, Suzuki says.
