This week we are proud to present you with the re-release of the second issue of the Official Sega Magazine. The precursor to the Official Sega Saturn Magazine. In the not so distant future we'll be taking a jump in this magazine's past and look at the very first coverage of the Sega Saturn, starting with issue 17. But for now, let's look back at the height of the Mega Drive's populatity with this particular issue.
We begin with a look at the feature for Castlevania Bloodlines, followed by one for Sonic 3. Then we have a look at the Sega Multi-Mega/CDX. And finally we look at reviews for both WWF Rage in the Cage and Castlevania Bloodlines.

We are back with a newly remastered version of issue number 18 of the Official Sega Saturn Magazine.
As always, this issue has been re-edited to look even better than before, including new colour settings which put it much closer to the original physical magazine compared to the previous release. We start off with a look at Elevator Action Returns on the Saturn, which sadly never left Japan. From here we move on to a feature on Manx TT, as well as a big feature on Mass Destruction. Our final feature is for the somewhat obscure arcade fighting game by Capcom: Red Earth. But that is not all! We also have a look at not one, but two interviews in this issue. The first one is with Lobotomy Software about Duke Nukem 3D and the second one talks with Tetsuya Mizuguchi about Sega Touring Car Challenge.

For the second week in a row we focus on a re-release of a back issue of Official Sega Saturn Magazine. As always, this is the definite version of this magazine. The colours should be spot on with this release as well as the attention to detail when it comes to cleaning up marks of old age has been raised even more compared to the old version.
Our first preview is for a fan favourite racing game that sadly never left the arcades: Scud Race. We then take another in-depth look at Fighters Megamix as well as the newly converted arcade racer Manx TT Superbike.
And for the final preview of this issue we look at Hexen by Probe Entertainment.

This time we jump back in time a little. The Official Sega Saturn Magazine is an all-time favourite of many people, yet it missed the actual Sega Saturn launch by 6 months. The reason being that at the time the system launched, the magazine was still called the Official Sega Magazine instead.
So we wanted to jump to the Sega Saturn launch and since going through 15 more issues of OSM would take a long time, we jump around a bit. As always we select a couple of features to preview the magazine before you download the full release. We start off with two of the finest racing games ever created: Sega Rally for the arcade and Daytona USA on the Sega Saturn. We also take a look at Theme Park on the Mega Drive and the little known racer for the 32X: BC Racers.

After breaking records with their Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign, the developers at Ys Net are taking an... interesting stance toward fans of the project. You see, as a result of the wildly successful crowdfunding campaign for another entry in the cult classic franchise, not everyone who wanted to get in on the action was able to before it ended. So Ys opened up a "slacker backer" period where folks could pledge their support (and dollars) via Paypal, adding to the $6 million already promised to the developers from Kickstarter backers. All good, right?
Well so as to not anger the folks who got in before the original campaign deadline, the developer conducted a poll to see if the "slackers" should have access to the previously promised rewards. The results are in.
Despite a majority of respondents saying they wanted the Kickstarter exclusive rewards (4,670 responded in the affirmative, 6,432 could take it or leave it and 4,009 said to keep the rewards exclusive), the developer has gone with the smallest vote here. Sure, that makes sense. Ys' official reasoning:"Considering the strong response from those of you who felt that the exclusive rewards should remain exclusive for the Kickstarter, those exclusive rewards will not be made available on the PayPal page as originally promised."
On one hand, here's to a video game company actually maintaining the integrity of the word "exclusive" for once. But on the other, the PayPal backers were initially promised access to this stuff. It's pretty excremental of Ys to deny them that even after poll results indicated that backers largely would be fine with offering the rewards to folks who were late to the party, though. But hey, worse things have happened to people who've backed a game on Kickstarter before.

Yu Suzuki has offered his Kickstarter backers a new look at Shenmue 3, offering an update that's an abridged version of a talk the veteran designer recently gave at the Chuapp X 2015 event in China.
Suzuki's talk went into detail about the scope of Shenmue 3 and where it fits into a series which was originally to comprise 11 chapters, with the first Dreamcast game taking in the first chapter while its sequel featured the second chapter as well as elements of the fourth and fifth.
"The composition for Shenmue 3 has been finalised, and will begin with Chapter 5 as the continuation of Shenmue 2, to move on past Chapter 6," wrote Suzuki in the update. "The story has been written to align with this structure; and the planning for the game elements that will go along with the story have been completed. This project was conceived to be scalable, since the game would necessarily need to be adjusted based on the Kickstarter."
Suzuki also teased the return of Ine-san, the housekeeper players will be familiar with from the the first game, and detailed the progress made so far on Shenmue 3.
"The basic systems have been put in place and we are currently testing the Destruction (when objects break) and High Ground (environmental interactivity) effects," Suzuki said in the update. "Unlike the development from 15 years earlier, we have assets already available to us and we are in an era where we can create prototypes even without a programmer. Programs, artwork and planning have become more closely related, realizing a new type of work flow for a new age. This new work flow utilizes both game engines, which used to be very expensive, and allows for work to be done on a more open, individual basis. I hope this will lead to everyone more fully enjoying their work."
Shenmue 3 broke Kickstarter's funding records for a video game soon after it went live at E3 this year, and is on schedule for a launch at the end of 2017. We caught up with Suzuki at this year's TGS to check in on its progress, and found the director of classics such as OutRun and Virtua Fighter to be hard at work on the keenly awaited sequel.

A few years ago, [Mike]’s friend gave him an old Sega Genesis with the very cool and somewhat rare SegaCD drive attached. The SegaCD gave him an idea – while it’s not easy to burn a cartridge and play homebrew games on a real Genesis console, everyone has a CD burner somewhere. [Mike] began writing his demo and then realized adding Java would be easy on the 68000. The result is Java on three billion devices and a Sega Genesis.
This project is built around Java Grinder a Java byte code compiler that will compile classes, factories, and all the horrible Java design.design.pattern.pattern.patterns() into assembly language. Already, there are a lot of platforms supported by Java Grinder, including the Commodore 64, the TI99, and thanks to some work from [Joe Davisson], the Apple IIgs
With a byte code compiler, an assembler, and an API for the Sega-specific hardware, [Mike] set about building his demo. Since this was a Sega, it needed the ‘SEGA’ sound at the start. [Mike] ended up recording his voice saying ‘JAVA!’ This plays through the Z80 on the Genesis.
The complete demo – viewable in its emulated format below – has everything you would expect from a proper demo. Starfields, dancing sprites, and even a Mandelbrot pattern make it into the three-minute long demo.

A quarter of a century after its release in the UK, the Mega Drive could be a star performer this Christmas.
The Daily Mail reports that sales of AtGames’ Sega Mega Drive console have jumped 400 per cent at Argos “in recent weeks”. This version of the machine includes two wireless controllers in the style of the original’s later six-button pad.
It also includes 80 in-built games, half of which are Mega Drive originals. In addition, a cartridge port allows those who own original titles to play those as well. The device currently sells for £39.99.
“There's a real appetite for nostalgia at the moment, whether it is firing up old consoles, or dusting down old vinyl records,” Argos buyer Laura Hamblyn said.
“The Sega Mega Drive is fondly remembered by the 90s generation who would spend hours helping Sonic The Hedgehog to defeat his arch nemesis Doctor Robotnik. It is fantastic to see parents buying this console to relive their childhood and introduce their own kids to some old school gaming.”
The retro movement never went away but has muscled its way back into the mainstream eye a little more of late. Both GAME and GameStop have re-introduced legacy titles into their offer, while an increasing number of systems based on old machines have hit (largely online) stores. Genuine older machines such as the Dreamcast have also enjoyed a bump in sales.
Not that the sector is without its problems, however, with the legalities of emulation proving a sticking point on more than one occasion.
