Speaking of behind the scenes stuff, things have not been quiet on the Dreamcast front either. Although we have nothing to announce right now, we have signed and worked with multiple groups on Dreamcast projects for the future. There are no guarantees on anything, of course, but we expect that the future could hold some more really cool Dreamcast stuff from the company that figured out how to legally release titles for the Dreamcast in the first place.

This author has spoken about his fondness of the Mega Drive magazine, Mega, for some time, here and here, but has it really been two years since the release of Mega issue 1? Apparently so. Well that is going to change as one this author’s favourite gaming magazine of all time will start to appear slightly more frequently. Starting with issue 2 right now.
With their second issue, cover dated November 1992, the Mega team continued the impressive array of content, layout and design, including news, previews and reviews of the day, with the style and wit you would expect from a quality Future Publishing magazine.
Highlights of the issue include the six-page review of Sonic 2, a feature on the Mega Drive’s history in the UK (pre-Mega), a news piece on why cartridges are so expensive, the Mega CD stonker that is Thunder Storm FX, an interview with Games Master host, Dominik Diamond. This and more can be found in the jam packed 108 pages.
It was quite problematic choosing four online articles from the magazine, as there is so much good stuff in there. However, after consideration, the following articles were plucked out for highlighting: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the interview with Dominik Diamond, Thunder Storm FX and the undervalued pool game, Side Pocket.
The release of Mega issue 2 also sees some slight changes at Out-of-Print Archive. With the upcoming release of the iPad 3, the OoPA team felt it was necessary to up the full resolution of the releases to 2560px. So along with the iPod/iPhone 1024px and Tablet 1600px versions, there is a size to suit everyone’s preferred reading platform. To check out the online articles and to find the download links, jump over to the Mega issue 2 catalogue page now!

A French design student has dreamed up the Dreamcast successor console that never was.

We thought we'd share it."The insight of the project was really to take the best of the 90's Dreamcast and then re-interpret it to make a new game console inspired by the old one," he explaines.
<FIGURE style="POSITION: relative; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; BORDER-RIGHT-WIDTH: 0px; WIDOWS: 2; TEXT-TRANSFORM: none; BACKGROUND-COLOR: rgb(255,255,255); TEXT-INDENT: 0px; MARGIN: 0px 20px 20px 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; WIDTH: 300px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; DISPLAY: block; FONT: ; WHITE-SPACE: normal; ORPHANS: 2; FLOAT: left; BORDER-TOP-WIDTH: 0px; BORDER-BOTTOM-WIDTH: 0px; LETTER-SPACING: normal; COLOR: rgb(68,68,68); CLEAR: both; VERTICAL-ALIGN: baseline; BORDER-LEFT-WIDTH: 0px; WORD-SPACING: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px; border-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px" class="article-image article-image- article-image-300"></FIGURE>"Thanks to its network connectivity, the Dreamcast [Delta] will recognize phones, touchscreen tablets, smartphone for young gamers but also regular wireless controllers for true casual and hardcore gamers if needed."Nowadays, it's sometimes difficult to plug our game console to our tv because all the connections are behind the device. We generally turn the game console, hold it in a risky way and move the furniture.
"Thanks to this new shape, we could have more space to connect the game console without moving it."
In an interview last year, Sega's executive VP of sales and marketing Alan Pritchard stomped on (mental) speculation that Sega might one day release a new Dreamcast console.
Asked about CVG's interview with Sonic creator Yuji Naka, in which he said he wants to make Dreamcast 2, the Sega man said: "Unless there's something I don't know - no one has told me about getting back into the console business."

Sega has officially launched its full online Sonic the Hedgehog store.
The site went live on a test basis last month. It features a range of merchandise including figures, stationary, clothes, posters and DVDs. The range will widen throughout the year, too.
It includes a loyalty system, too, which awards Reward Points for every purchase that can be redeemed against future orders.
Furthermore, customers can get 15 per cent off any order until the end of the month by entering the following code – JANSALE15. There’s no limit on the number of times the cade can be used.
“Sonic the Hedgehog’s fan base has grown continually over the past twenty years and the demand for branded merchandise has increased along with his popularity” SEGA Europe’s head of brand licensing Sissel Henno stated.
“By teaming up with RHM Solutions we are able to provide something for all Sonic fans with an online store that includes fashionable apparel, collectible figurines, stylish stationery and much more. We are looking forward to seeing how the store evolves and how consumers can engage with the brand in a new way.”

New year, new ‘Back in Time’ article. This time we go back twenty years to take look at the cream of the videogaming magazines from January 1992. This was a time when the Sega magazine scene was kicking off big time with two new launches, Sega Force and MegaTech, while the first dedicated Nintento mag, Total!, also appeared. Games wise, Another World was simply out of this world on the Amiga, two unlikely aliens called Toejam & Earl crash landed on the Mega Drive, Donald Duck quacked his way onto the Mega Drive and Super Space Invaders invaded the 8-bit computers…
Accompanying the main feature itself are four online review articles taken from the magazines covered. From Zero issue 27, Another World is reviewed on the Amiga; from Total! issue 1, the NES game, Solstice, is reviewed; from Sega Force issue 1, the Mega Drive version of Speedball 2 is reviewed and from Amiga Power issue 9, Celtic Legends is reviewed.
The main ‘Back in Time’ feature and the online articles can be found at the Out-of-Print Archive website.

Yu Suzuki has hinted at a possible move to acquire the rights to the Shenmue franchise from Sega.
And of course, the only reason he would make such a move would be to finally get to work on the long demanded Shenmue III.
"Shenmue's license is an IP that belongs to Sega,” he said in a video interview spotted by Spong. “We can obtain the license from Sega.”
And proving that the game still preys on his mind, Suzuki even shared some of his thoughts on where he’d like to take the potential next instalment in the series.
"This is the person who has trained with Iwao [Hazuki] in the olden days in China,” he added of a picture of a new character. “Then, in the story that will take place after Shenmue II, he will become a ‘key’ character."
Suzuki is said to have written 11 chapters in his Shenmue saga, the first of which was the basis for the 2000 Dreamcast release Shenmue. Chapters two to six were then covered in its 2001 sequel.

We were already head over heels for the original Retrode, and we've gotta say -- version 2.0 looksmighty good in that attire. As the story goes, the product shown above is the result of some three years of toiling, with the second iteration handling cartridges for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. In fact, there's a pair of ports on here, enabling one cart from each console to be loaded up and carried around. Users need only to find and install an emulator on their machine, plug a cartridge and / or an associated controller into the device and then connect the Retrode 2 to one's computer via USB. Once you've loaded a ROM into your emulator, configured your controller and canceled every appointment on your calendar for the next 48 hours... well, you're in for quite a weekend of retro gaming nirvana. It's up for pre-order now in the source link for $84.99, with shipments expected to begin on January 23rd.
