GyroVorbis posted a new episode of Adventures in Game Development at Youtube, a video journal covering the development of the 2D RPG Elysian Shadows for Dreamcast and PC: "We tried to use the engine to do a few side projects, to sort of show off its capabilities. We created a Chu Chu Rocket clone and recreated a level from Super Mario Bros."
After several weeks of delays, Chapter 15 is finally here. As you can see from the video, the majority of the time was spent screwing around with the engine. It was still productive, though. We tweaked Lua in a few places, and it got us even more ready to throw down on the actual Elysian Shadows.
Unfortunately this will be our last video for several weeks. All of us have final exams, work projects, and other things eating our time. It's either we take a break or continue work without being able to give the project our full attention. We would rather not make contributions or videos that aren't up to our own standards.
Full news post along with a detailed look into the status of our project here: http://elysianshadows.com/project/news
MARIO BROS - There are still parts of the level (as you could see) that were slightly sketchy. Keep in mind that this was made in a day. We didn't want to cheat and continue working after 24 hours. I have faith that it could be made perfectly if we had another day.
CAMERA ISSUES - As you can see, Youtube is now widescreen. This makes our videos look even shittier than ever. I attempted to record this chapter at 640x480 (highest resolution our cheap camera can do), but it still looks bad. I am considering perhaps starting a donation fund to help us get a new camera. The audio and video completely suck on this one.
FORUMS - If you like what you see and are interested in somehow becoming involved with game development or seeking help, I encourage you to join our forums over at elysianshadows.com. We have plenty of talented indie developer regulars who would be glad to help with your questions.

SEGA Saturn Coding Contest
Porting Party winter '08/'09
It is time again for another episode of the annual SEGA Saturn Coding Contest. A few small changes compared to previous contests mean significant improvements for all contestants:
Your effort is directly rewarded with a prize. No more "I don't have a chance to compete with contestant x", because your prize does not depend on your rank. Instead the amount depends solely on your effort.
The goal to port games over to saturn lowers the amount of annoying debugging work, so you get more result out with less work and you can concentrate on the funny things of homebrew coding.
Objective:
As Porting Party suggests, the objective is to take an existing game of your choice and port it over to SEGA Saturn! This implies that the source code of that game is available and written in C or C++. It's totally up to you which game you choose! Choose your game carefully, try playing it yourself before starting to port it. You'll be best off picking up a game that's finished, very enjoyable to play and that doesn't exceed the hardware capabilities of the SEGA Saturn console.
Time:
The contest is running during winter 2008/2009. Meteorologically, this is the time from december 21st 2008 to march 20th 2009. So march 20th 2009 is the deadline for submitting your entries. To submit your entry: upload the Zip-compressed ISO CD image to a file hosting service like megaupload.com and submit the link via email to C4@rockin-b.de.
Prizes:
All entries are rewarded, no matter which rank. The better your entry is, the more money you win. The more entries you submit, the more money you win.- Money: Every entry wins as much money, as it got points from the judges. So having achieved the maximum results in: 90 point = 90 euro. Even more if you collected extra points by using special saturn hardware features. Multiple entries means multiple times money! Money is transfered via paypal, contestants in the EU can alternatively use bank transfer.
- USB Data Link v2: This device connects your Saturn with your PC and transfers game saves, bios and uploads homebrew games for testing. Version 2 is brand new and exclusive to contestants, it transfers data much faster than version 1, you can't get it anywhere else. All contestants who haven't got a one last year, will get one for free. Those who won such a device last year, can have it upgraded to v2 for free!
Judging:
The entries are judged in the three categories: graphics, sound and gameplay. The judging is done by 5 to 6 judges in parallel. Every judge rates each entry in each category by giving a rating between 1 and 5 points. This means each entry can get up to 75/90 points regularly.
Additionally, extra points can be achieved by using special hardware features of the Saturn console.
So happy coding everyone. Porting is perfectly suited to submit multiple entries, because each single entry is being rewarded!

December 20th, 2008, 20:27 Posted By: wraggster
DKnute (news via aep) has released a new version of the Dreamcast Emulator For Windows, heres whats new:
The idea was to have FPGA handle the ATA interface, including DMA burst transfers, while external MCU will run part of Makaron GD code and take care of all the high-level stuff. 2GB Secure Digital card will provide necessary GD data.
I realized that EP2C20 can easily host both the interface and a soft-core NIOS II CPU with all the supporting logic for onboard memory chips. Now this is neat, I can actually run the NIOS faster than my ARM7 and it has more memory too (I mean, just the SDRAM is 8MB vs 64kB on-chip SRAM on ARM). The only problem is I don't have license for that IP core so the USB programming cable needs to be attached at all times, or the board will freeze eventually. Both ARM and Cyclone boards have SD slots so I can change my mind anytime
Anyway, SPI<->SD communication works both on ARM and NIOS now (it's the same C code, save the low-level I/O stuff). Now I need to handle FAT. There is a free library for that but I want to write my own with a bit more buffering as an option. Since it's read-only it shouldn't be much of a problem, it's just that both target CPUs can only do aligned memory accesses and that needs to be worked around for the FAT structure parsing.
VHDL code for ATA i/f is progressing, but slowly. I haven't done any of this before - I doubt programming GAL devices counts
There is a new MKFro available for download. It's a GUI for Makaron T11/1 - both Dreamcast and NAOMI versions.
MKFro requires NET Framework 2.0 or higher. Please direct any questions you might have to it's author slrhui.

SX posted this news over at lavalit:
I have decided this is the best time to relabel OpenBOR from version 2.xxx to 3.xxxx once I have finished working on stereo support on XBOX and added 16,32 bit video to xbox and dreamcast and finally fix the controls on gp2x. Here are the list of upcoming features, though not many but they are significant.
8,16,32 bit video modes for all platforms.
Stereo support for all platforms.
A new list of video modes that the engine will support.
Now this means, there will not be any releases until I have finished, which I believe I should be finished in about 1 to 2 weeks.

Sega having trouble with Sonic? It’s been that way for years. A long time ago on console named after a planet in this galaxy, Sega was developing Sonic X-Treme which had a unique concept of rounded worlds. The result was a game that looks like a mix of Sonic 3D Blast and the PsOne game Pandemonium that we never got to play it since Sega canned Sonic X-Treme.
Most of the revealed Sonic X-Treme footage has shown Sonic jumping outdoors like a platformer. A new Sonic X-Treme video discovered by a LostLevels forum member has more of a Sonic feel to it. In this level Sonic rolls on windy tracks while the whole world spins around him. The effect is neat to watch and it may have been neat to play if Sonic X-Treme materialized.

News/release from Indiket.
After living a few intense days, what better way to relax and savor the Homebrew ports and interesting, no?
Today I bring you a new port for our Blanquita, a game that you have asked in the forums here and have a good alternative.
It is the GEMZAR. This game is a free clone of the famous Bejeweled. Although not have sound, if anyone is encouraged to add something it is not difficult to modify. In this version you can not save / load a game.
As chula feature, you can add different tilesets (Types tab) without touching anything about code. Includes 4 tilesets (the normal and even one of the Smurfs xD). Someone is encouraged to make a sonic? xD
License: GPL.
Author: Jonathan Bilodeau
Web: http://gemz.sourceforge.net/
I have read that Quzar had tried something with this port, but I have not seen the final version ... In any case, this version works perfectly. It is advisable to use it with the mouse, but also works with the analog pad.

Another great release for the Dreamcast scene from Ron:
LuPLINKO is a port of the Amiga LUPENGO for Dreamcast.
I think I have seen in the past a cover version by IMR, although here the port is not the same, comes from the repositories Amiga and has been re-ported to Dreamcast.
Pengo is a classic game that has a lot of years, but is adicitivo and playable, so that together with diamonds from 3 in 3 and crush the enemies, you can have a good time.
The game was developed by Carlo Borreo in 1999 and 2000 and this is his website.
The controls are: (DC Keyboard Required)
Player 1: numeric keypad (numlock), shooting 5 =
Player 2: ERTDFXCV, shooting = Z

StevenH has released Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe for the Dreamcast, what an awesome release for the Dreamcast Scene
Heres his news:
So, after a few grueling weeks of screwing around with the KOS libraries (KallistOS) I managed to compile and run the latest revision of OTTD.
It's been more of an educational experience than anything else and runs like crap (the 200mhz SH4 CPU seems to struggle) but it's been a lot of fun...
I have CD images in DiscJuggler format (self-booting) of the latest version but due to dependencies that don't exist off-the-shelf I don't think this should ever be included in the trunk... I mean, does anyone still have DC with Mouse and Keyboard?
... on that note, the controller can be used... but it's not as much fun.

Christuserloeser posted this news:
Since Scherzo doesn't plan to work on NesterDC SE in the near future, I decided to compile a release with the modifications to the GUI that I sent him a while back. This includes the free ROM browser Scherzo posted about a while back.
-How to burn-
I recommend BootDreams: http://dchelp.dcemulation.org/
ROMs go in /NES/ folder. Maximum number of characters per file name should be 46+3 (with .zip or .nes extension).
-File browser controls-
A - selects game, opens directory
X - goes up a directory
B - goes back to the main menu
L/R - scrolls faster through the listed items

Russian Dreamcast programmer alex updated GPF's port of gpsp, a GBA emulator for Dreamcast. alex improved the emulation speed a lot - gpspDC is a lot faster now. With some 2D games gpspDC runs now with around 60-90% of the original speed! alex is still trying to improve his emulator. You can find binaries (including source code) of gpspDC attached below
Thanks to Elch from SEGA-DC.DE for pointing us to this release.

Yuan Works of Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles fame are working on a platform game called Little Ninja:
"The game will sport a very japonesque look, featuring a lot of rocks, rivers, waterfalls, exotic trees, and cerulean skies. (Which pretty much renders our “keep it simple” useless…)
As for Ryuuhi, I still haven’t fully decided on the final look he will have, but he now has several animations, all running at full 30 fps. I swore I would never animate anything at that rate again after Wind and Water. But oh, well."
