On the list of features to implement on Dreamcast are:- Stereo support

- PowerVR hardware graphics acceleration
- Improvements and fixes to RAM handling
If you think that SX deserves some sort of proof of your appreciation for his hard work, then send him a small donation to his OpenBoR Donation Box (PayPal account required)

guillaume.duhamel has today posted a new release of the Sega Saturn Emulator for Linux and Windows :
Now that half of emulation news sites already told about the release, it’s time for us to do the same
Yabause 0.9.9 is out and is mostly a bugfix release, though it adds a few features to some ports like locale detection for Gtk+/Qt ports and support for up to 12 pads in the Qt port.

Assembler points out this video in which Sega used chimps to market the Saturn. Judging by the games, this was very early days for the machine. Note that the primate on the left is named "Seagal" (Segaalu) and the one on the right is named "Anthony" (Ansonii), thus Sega vs Sony. Pretty lame campaign, but I like monkeys, and it's kind of interesting to see how they marketed their 3D like it was the business.

via satakore.com
Madroms released a new compilation of Dezeamon 2 games for his Dezaemon 2 Save Game Manager:
It's Christmas time, again! This year, I had another batch of Dezaemon 2 games given by the Japanese community. So, I made another tool, the Dezaemon 2 Save Game Manager Vol. 2 that can be grabbed here:
http://www.satakore.com/news130,,Mer...tmas-2008.html
This year the tool contains 74 games. For each game, you can listen to one music sample and watch a video and some screenshots. The D2SGM2 contains a total of 1706 screenshots/pictures, 104 music samples and 74 videos.
Videos on homebrew Saturn programs is something new. As we don't have high level tools to make cinepak videos, if we make high quality videos they will not run smoothly on a real Saturn and there will be a lot of flickering. I hope some good programmers could make some great programs in the future to convert videos to Cinepak that can be handle well by the Saturn.
Each game has always 5 save game slots (named DEZA2___._01 to DEZA2___._05), all of them are the same. Just choose the one you want to copy. They are all recognized by Dezaemon 2 game (DEZA2___._01 = slot 1, and so on).
The D2SGM2 works on 352x240 resolution, so you need a RGB compatible TV to see all the lines on screen (info taken from the Sega Saturn programming doc). Else, you can try using the highres mode implemented (704x480 resolution) but I don't know if it resolves the problem.
The D2SGM2 must work on all Sega Saturn. I only tested it on EUR and JPN saturn with RGB cable on RGB compatible TVs, and all works well.
This tool has been made with the help of:
- Rockin'B: thanks for your Save Game Manager and your advices
- IGK: really thanks for your help, your confidence and the beta tests you made + all the musics you recorded and all the videos you made!
- NENG: thanks for your beautiful musics!
- vbt: thanks for your help on Saturn coding and your advices
- darius: thanks for the AR and PC COMMS Card
- Raynex: Thanks for your beautiful intro screen!
- all the members of The Dezaemoners community for their superb works
The Games and Musics that can be found on the D2SGM2 are copyright by Athena, A2TA, GISHU, HONG-KONG, IGK, ITON, Kenichiro, KEROYON, KONNICHIHA, leimonZ, mo4444, NENG, oda, Raynex, Sak, SAWAGANI, Shilfy-Yo, Shinichi Mochizuki, Shu Tokutomi, Soft Bank, TOROPICA and ttechi.
I really want to thanks once again all the members of the Dezaemon 2 community for their wonderful works and for sharing them with us, and IGK for the work he did on this project. Without them, all of this would not have been possible.
Don't forget to visit the japanese Dezaemon Community website: http://lmnz.at.infoseek.co.jp/dezaemoners.htm
About the Dezaemon 2 database, I updated it with some new games. And as always, IGK helped me a lot and made all the videos available on Youtube for them. He did a great work again! Thanks guy!!
Now, I will let you browse the database and test our new D2SGM2. You will probably have hundreds of hours of play.
Merry Christmas 2008!!
Volume 1 with 118 Dezeamon games was released on December 2007: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=82793

Runik posted some new news about his Sega Saturn emu for Windows:
May 2009 be a great year to everyone
There's not a lot of news regarding Saturnin, as last month and a half corresponded to a peak of work into my real job. So my free time was drastically reduced during this period, and I couldn't work on Saturnin as much as I wanted ...
But that didn't mean that I didn't do anything : I created a local subversion server and put the source code on it, as I never gave up the idea to move the project to open source (don't expect anything soon though )
I also started using a task manager to handle all the notes lying around and the todo list (it's Task Coach for those interested), with the hope to have everything a bit more formalized.
On the code itself, I did some rearrangement to clean everything up, to put all the related functions into the same files, etc. ...
And now I'm back on adding the bitmaps to the rendering engine, but there are some difficulties that can't be solved right now, forcing me to create a more advanced VDP2 texture debugger.
So I'm 100% on that right now.

On one hand Sega has been moving forward with new franchises like Valkyria Chronicles and Sands of Destruction. On the other, well at least in the USA, Sega seems interested in their past.
In another Sega trademark search we discovered ChuChu Rocket was re-registered by Sega USA on December 22, 2008. Does this mean Sega is secretly working on reviving ChuChu Rocket as an online enabled Xbox Live Arcade game? Hopefully yes, but not necessarily.
This year Sega has re-registered lots names for Dreamcast titles like Sonic Shuffle, Cosmic Smash, Jet Grind Radio, and Virtual-On Oratorio Tangram. Like we mentioned before these are probably protective trademarks, but it is strange to see Sega spend money, and registering trademarks costs quite a bit of money, to protect so many game names. Interestingly, in the case of ChuChu Rocket the previous trademark isn’t even expired. So why would Sega spend all of this money to protect names of games that aren’t even their hot properties? Is Sega going to pull a Nintendo with a “New Play Control” series of their own?

Christluu aka Jon Misugi informed us that segagagadomain.com hosts new exclusive video footage of DUX and -this certainly is surprising- XOP aka DalForce:
Dux- Stage 1 new version
http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-...c/dux-beta.htm
Dalforce on Dreamcast- early beta version
http://www.segagagadomain.com/movie-pages-dc/xop.htm
What we have here is an early beta version of X.O.P for the Sega Dreamcast. This unlicensed shooter has been in production for quite some time. Worked had stopped on it at one point but now with the success of many unlicensed Dreamcast games the team are back on the job.
This version is far from complete which is why the audio is unstable at times as well as the graphics looking rough in a few areas. The side bar graphics will also be changed for sure. There are also many features to add to the game however in this version you can see that there are some "achievement" options available.
X.O.P. will probably be released under the new title of DalForce but don't take that as 100% certain.
Many many thanks to the team behind this game for allowing Segagaga Domain to publish this video and good luck on completing what could be one of the most interesting unlicensed shooters for the Dreamcast.
Other additions to the Movie Vault at Segagaga Domain from the same day include:
Boku Doraemon - Capcom Taisen Fan Disc - Death Crimson 2 - Get !! Colonies - Jet Coaster Dream - July - The House of the Dead 2 - Totsugeki Teketeke Toy Ranger - Virtua Athlete 2K
The Segagaga Domain's store also opened its Dreamcast software section. Check it out here: http://www.segagagadomain.com/store-0.htm

DUX, the new Dreamcast shmup by Last Hope graphic artist Rene Hellwig, sees another delay.
As the trailer shows DUX has almost reached its final state. So the game itself is pretty much finished but it takes more time to get the game run flawlessly on the Dreamcast - that's the main reason why this game has yet to be released. Currently it's not easy to give an exact release date so you can expect the game early next year.
We hope everyone who has a pre-order for the game is not discouraged by the many delays and understands that we want to make and release an flawless product.
Btw, If you already have a pre-order for the regular DUX you can easily upgrade to an Limited Edition by using this contact form.
The Limited Edition comes in a 2 disc DVD case featuring the game's soundtrack CD. It can be preordered here: http://www.hucast.net/shop/

Jun Misugi aka christluu recently interviewed Max Scharl of redspotgames, publisher of Yuan Works' Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles:
Max Scharl: Some magazines and websites consider this puzzle game as by far the best game independent of the Dreamcast. However, it is much more than a simple puzzle game. The story mode provides access to a world map like Super Mario World and several mini-games of different genres (racing, RPG, QTY ...)
We have devoted great efforts to promote this title, for example by being present at the Retro Classic Gaming leave-on-Thérouanne (or Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles was officially put on sale on 1 November 2008) and the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, the exhibition games the largest in Europe.
Jun Misugi: Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is now released for several weeks and received in all good criticism. Are you satisfied with the sales?
Max Scharl: Selling new games for older consoles is very different from what is happening to the current generation of consoles. For the Dreamcast, this means that most of the copies of a new game will not be sold during the first months as is the case with the titles of the current generation. But it takes a year or two years, the demand is constant if you are advertising again and again. We have more mouths to ears, and will be better sales.
Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles is a puzzle game and thus more difficult to sell that shoots em up to the Dreamcast. But thanks to the many presentations at large exhibitions and events, we will ensure that capacity to make famous. We also have good contacts. This game has already been announced several times on television and has been tested in magazines known as gamesTM.
Jun Misugi: Do you plan to continue to release more games for Dreamcast?
Max Scharl: To be honest and to the point: It depends on the sale of Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles. We have already noticed a decline in demand for Dreamcast games in the past, there are almost 2 years during the release of our first game Last Hope. If the application is guaranteed, we will, of course, publish other games. As against, if demand falls we can hardly cover expenses. We will review later.
Jun Misugi: Could you tell us about your future plans?
Max Scharl: We are currently looking to become a publisher, distributor, promoter and reliable for several platforms and retro alternative. Supporter independent developers is very important for us and we want to give them a chance by bringing their games distributed on the market more professional as possible.
All independent programmers can contact us on http://www.redspotgames.com and we will see how we can realize their dreams of having a professional outlet for their games. Do not hesitate and enter your chance!

Yuan Works of Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles fame are working on the stages of their upcoming game Little Ninja:
"In a normal traditional platform game, we’ll need some pretty tiles that cycle without giving too much hint that they are tiles. This game however, aims to capture the natural organic feel of the environment, so it will have many unique tilesets (that is, there will be many tiles which are only used once)."
"Games that feature this kind of tilesets include the Metal Slug series, as well as the arenas for most modern fighters."
