Runik has after a long while posted some WIP news of his Saturn emulator for Windows:
The cache is finally working for the VDP2 cell mode (the one used in the bios). I had some transparency problem due to textures not being reloaded when the transparency bit of the screen was changed, but that's now corrected.
Performances are quite interesting in the current cache state, ie around 50 fps when the "Sega Saturn" text is displayed, and between 30 and 40 fps inside the cd player.
You might say it's not that fast, but actually as the whole page is displayed (ie 512*512 pixels) instead of just the visible part (ie 320*224 in that case), a lot of extra calculation is done, which slows down the display. Of course I'll change that in the future, but right now it's already faster than it was in the previous release, so that's a good start
Now that's the cache is running for cell mode, I'm now in the process of integrating bitmap mode to it ... I took the opportunity to redesign the way both modes are setup, and to put it in different functions.
My goal is to have the whole bitmap to be added as a single texture to the texture map. That implies to modify the texture class structure, as until now each VDP2 texture was considered to be 8*8.
Now the bitmap texture will just be considered as a big cell (up to 1024*512), and displayed like the others.
So what are the next steps ?
add bitmaps to the VDP2 cache
convert the other display modes to use the cache
test the cache speed, and improve it
That's all for now (but that's a lot, believe me )

It's mighty trendy around these parts to say how much you lament the day when Sega caved to the PS2 and pulled the plug on the Dreamcast, but which side were you on when the Saturn was getting tag-teamed by the OG PlayStation and N64? That poor thing never come close to the sales of even its failed successor, yet still sits fondly in the hearts of a dedicated few arcade-minded gamers. Perhaps that's why Japanese modders at an Akihabara shop decided to bring one back to life, ripping its 32-bit guts out and replacing them with those required to support a dual-core Atom 330, including 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM and a 160GB HDD. Even the peripherals have been overhauled, the memory cartridge turned into an over-sized USB stick and the four-button Shuttle mouse receiving a laser transplant. If it could still play Virtual On: Cyber Troopers we'd be getting out our passports.

News from Play Asia:

Innovation can be found everywhere. HUCAST and Yuan Works are two small game production groups that win large scale recognition amongst gamers for their innovative products.
Although their games are neither endorsed nor produced under the supervision of the Dreamcast's mother company Sega, it is widely accepted that the games from these two developers are produced to a professional level.
These are games by gamers for gamers.
Developed by HUCAST under the NG DEV TEAM of Last Hope fame, DUX is a 2D shooter that combines strategic gameplay with exhilarating shooting not completely unlike its predecessor.
Instead of orbiting satellites, control a cute and chic, pink and orange aircraft and shoot down all the opposing forces. Utilizing the graphical capabilities of the console, the game includes some smooth and vibrant movies that will surely stimulate your gaming appetites.
Although the tactical aspect is still present, it plays a smaller role than in Last Hope, making the system easier to master. Still, not everything depends on your reflexes and button punching skills, you also need an intact brain with adequate memory to carry yourself through this crisis.
If you are less inclined to open fire at your enemies, feel free to take them down in different ways. Shift the balance from adrenaline pumping to tactical skills in the brain twister Wind and Water Puzzle.
Originally designed for GP2X, this famous independent puzzle game has crossed borders and reached Sega's Dreamcast. Wind and Water does not only provide brain twisters, but comedic plot twists as well.
As a newbie game developer Amy, you are entrusted with the biggest challenge you have ever faced. You have to find the missing Yuan Works members and finish the Wind and Water Puzzle Arcade Version before the Grand Contest.
Twist both the blocks and your brain about as you seek ways to destroy obstacles in your path. Group same colored blocks together to make them disappear.
Besides reducing blocks, there are numerous other tasks that you have to accomplish before you can save the Yuan Works staff.
Try your hand at game making and ensure the future of Wind and Water, the Arcade release.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Besides the new shooter DUX, restock of its popular predecessor Last Hope is also expected to arrive just on time for the new releases.
Under the swarming attacks of the alien races, you are the last hope to human salvation. Your mission is as simple as this: Destroy the alien mothership before they destroy us.
Although the order is quite easily understood, its execution is a totally different matter. Ready your beam and satellite and all brain resources you can spare, as you will have to remember the architecture of the levels you travel through and, destroy all enemy crafts to succeed.
Reflex and brains, with these two, you will be able to take on anyone.
Here is the complete independent gaming lineup lineup available at Play-Asia.com.
DUX US$ 27.90
Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles US$ 39.99
Last Hope US$ 39.99

Ah, the Dreamcast. Just whispering its name brings thousands of fanboys to half-mast, so I can't even imagine the number of popped tents this beautiful handheld Dreamcast is going to provoke.
It really is a work of beauty, isn't it? We've seen portable Dreamcasts before, but this one just looks so much better. Created by Hailrazer on the Ben Heck Forums, it brings tears of both joy and sadness. It's such an awesome piece of work, yet it just brings back bad memories of the Dreamcast's untimely demise.

Sega has quietly launched the beta version of their online gaming portal / social networking site PlaySega.com. The site features a handful of casual games to poke at, including Sonic at the Olympic Games, which seems to be a port of the mobile phone version of the Official Beijing Olympics tie-in. Visitors to the site will be able to create their own personalized escape using items purchased through the website's ring currency, which you must play games to earn. I've already created my own escape, which is apparently a Swiss Chalet containing a small naked boy. Alrighty.
According to Casualgaming.biz, Sega plans to add over 30 new games to the site, many of which dip into the company's classic IP for inspiration. Hit the link below to check out the site. Registration is completely free, but the naked boy in Swiss Chalet feature will set you back 2,000 rings.

Im sure many of you who own or did own a Dreamcast in its Heyday will remember a few of the games that Ron has posted that never saw the light of day, heres the full translated text inc a video of Max Payne that never arrived on Dreamcast:
With a resounding Release Date: Canceled, Remedy Entertainment, the company's game developer announced the cancellation of one of the most anticipated titles for the Sega Dreamcast by thousands of players.
Max Payne is an action game in the third person 3D environment and developed for the PC by the Finnish company Remedy Entertainment, produced by 3D Realms and published by Gathering of Developers in July 2001. The game also was taken to other platforms such as Xbox, Playstation 2, Game Boy Advance and Macintosh
This game started out in 1998, came to be presented at the E3 of that year, but when I was at an advanced stage of development (bad language say that it was above 60%), along with the announcement of Sega in which surprised both friends and strangers with the discontinuation of its latest console, many of the studies decided not to continue with the marketing of "practically finished" games, as was the case of Propeller Arena, flinstones, Halflife and many others.
With the passage of time and given that many people have done with Katana DevKits (development unit of Sega Dreamcast) in many hard drives, have been found in games development phase and certain securities in an advanced state of the same, some have gone to light and by other ethical issues still filling that space so desired by many.
It is said that the underground networks of the Internet, it is feasible to get a dump of it, but at the moment I have not had the good fortune to see him ever, there are those who say that they have, but my opinion is far from accepting such an assertion.
The same goes with Castlevania, in the Dreamcast sites are always hoping that someday appear, having left all the titles that were canceled, another rooster sing?

From the official site:
Shadow volumes are in for opaque polygons, and they’re looking quite nice. And it didn’t even have as big a performance hit as I had expected. Translucent shadows need to be dealt with separately, alongside the translucent poly sorting (and will probably be quite a bit more expensive, but then again they’re more expensive on the actual PVR2 as well).
Other than that, Real Life(tm) has been quite busy recently, so progress has been a little slower than one might like, but we’re still on track for 0.9 at the moment.
Changes
Add opaque shadow volumes
Fix some punchout ordering problems
Add EXT_packed_depth_stencil support

Fackue has released a new version of Wolf3D for the Dreamcast, heres the release details:
Remember you will need 7-Zip (or any utility capable of extracting .7z files). The DC port doesn't have any DC-specific changes but it gets the port up-to-date with the official releases.
Wolf4SDL\DC 1.6 will be available for download on the right navigation menu in an hour. I'll update this post when the new version's uploaded.
EDIT: I forgot. Don't forget to create the wolf3d folder in the folder with 1ST_READ.BIN because it has been removed in this version. The Full Spear Of Destiny binary has been compiled so the security question doesn't run, I know I forgot to do that with 1.5 so my apologies to anyone who wasted a CD-R (or more).

Sony's PSP is currently getting its butt handed to it by the Nintendo DS, but don't tell that to Sega. With its upcoming Sega Vision PMP, due out in the UK sometime in 2009, the former hardware company-turned-sub par software maker is hoping to take on the jack-of-all-trades portable market. The prognosis for such a device is OK, but then again how could it not be? After all, this is the company that brought us the 32X, Saturn, and the Dreamcast—the only direction any Sega hardware offering could go from this point forward is up.

News via dreamcastes
It is an hour long version, more or less playable for proving the Maze of Galious for DC. As we must know is a remake of the game from Konami made by the people of BRAINGAMES-but I mention this because the lynch-to stay pretty, CHULISIMA, almost like watching the Christmas Program of Raphael.
The controls are mapped to the joystick of DC, with L was changed in September of sound (it does not work very well), with R is changed from September figure and the rest of the buttons ... ! descubranlos you who are for it!
Missing implement loading savegames-a-screen, but I think it should work if they have keyboard and correct errors, increase speed, add 3D graphics, video, virtual reality helmet, blah, blah, blah.
As for the port, not cost much, except for the portion of the sound, which I had to move from libraries to bookstores SDL MIXER native operating system Kallistios (SDL MIXER of the DREAMCAST not play files in OGG).
I thank Jorgito (my older brother) that was dedicated to putting all # ifdef Indiket and I step on how to use the data to reproduce oggs kos.
