Finally, the ranking of the entries of the C4-2007 SEGA Saturn Coding Contest has been determined!
It's been a very close run in the end, with Gaganoid (by VBT) and Police Officer Smith (Arnold and Rockin'-B) being draw with 57 points each!!!!! The battle had to be decided via extra points. This time at the beginning of the contest, a list of extra points was written down. Other people's suggestions were also integrated into the list. If an entry implements a feature from this list, it gets rewarded with an extra point.
Personally, I expected Gaganoid to win this year. After summing up the points from our 5 judges, I was very surprised to see the same number of points for both entries. But due to the massive use of high resolution images throughout the whole game, Police Officer Smith C4 wins over his strong competitor Gaganoid by getting 5 extra points in total.
One the other places follow the Dezaemon 2 Save Game Manager (Madroms), Destiny's Kingdom (Amon), Yaul Demo (Piratero) and SEGA Blur (VBT).
Big thanks go out to all contestants and to the judges as well. Now it's time to play these new Saturn homebrew games on your very own SEGA Saturn console!

Progress on the Sega Dreamcast emulator for Linux.
There’s some outstanding niggles with the transparency auto-sorting (which will be fixed when I beef up the sorting algorithm), but by and large I think I’ve fixed everything I broke with the render changes. So that’s merged back to trunk now where the rendering work will continue. The big win so far has been fixing perspective correction - by itself that’s fixed something like 95% of the visual problems I was seeing.
Time to do some more rendering features now I think ^_^
Changes
* Fix perspective-correction (shader-only at the moment)
* Change mip-map texture loading to work around bug in ATI drivers
* Add mirrored texture support
* Add configure checks for fbo + shader support (to avoid linking errors on really old GL libraries)

News/release from Fackue
This is a very quick port of SMS+SDL 7.1 by Gregory Montoir which was based on 0.9.4a of SMS Plus by Charles Mac Donald.
Put your .sms and .gg ROMs in /roms and burn.
The menu is a bit ugly, and not nearly as good as I'd like. There's currently no way to get back to the menu when you play a ROM - this was just a test port and I'll most likely not work on it anymore.
The ROM list code was taken from BlueCrab's SMS\GG\SG-1000 emulator, CrabEmu so all credits goes to him for that.

Progress on the Sega Dreamcast emulator for PC.
From the official site:
t least some of you must realize that developing Makaron is a time consuming process. Time I could very well be spending doing things that bring me money. I have expenses you know, mostly PC hardware and software but also Dreamcast games and other stuff (like a new oscilloscope, as the old one died on me sometime ago).
I'm happy people use my emulator and find it useful, but I also belive it's only fair I got someting out of it as well.
Having said that I've came up with an idea of Pay to Play system for Makaron - prepaid style. Makaron will be free to download and try out but to play longer you will need to purchase an activation code. Simply put, in exchange for money you'll be given a limited time to use my emulator. Once that time is up you'll need to pay again, very much like you would for a cell phone number.
Payment options will include credit cards and other common money transfer services, but I haven't yet decided on the rates so it'll take a few days to set everyting up. I will be done with the activation code shortly too.
This is the last free version: Makaron T10.
UPDATE: I've changed my mind - I'm going to start with payment system right now. If you've managed to download the free T10 then consider yourself lucky.

Do you enjoy the fabulousness of ScummVM? You still have a chance to add to it by participating in its development.
Prerequisities: ScummVM, students, and their free time and desire to take part in the development of one of the most successful open source projects. Whereas we don't have a problem with first item, the latter two aren't in a desired quantity this year.
So, it is your last chance to help us make ScummVM even better and get paid for it! The deadline of the Google Summer of Code (we reported it earlier) for student applications is drawing closer. Officially it is today, March 31st (although a deadline extension seems likely). UPDATE: The GSoC deadline was extend to April, 7th! The GSoC timeline should be updated soon to reflect this.
We added several new existing tasks to Open Tasks list, and we revised some of the old ones. Take a look now and apply.
Note that your first application draft doesn't have to be perfect. You have time till April 10th to improve upon it (see the GSoC timeline).
See you in the applications list!

New beta build of the Sega Saturn emulator for PC.
Thanks to our member Hawq for the changelog:
* Fixed SCSP sound formation processing.
* Fixed SCU DMA end interruption processing.
* Fixed Memory access weight processing.
* Fixed cache processing.
Version of the state saving data changed.
The option which the index position inside the track/truck of CD makes effective was provided.
Because Saturn can do CDDA playback with index appointment.
When it makes effective, index information is retained below the CDIndex folder.
Because option function of ReadCD command is used to index search,
Perhaps it becomes error depending upon drive.

More News from our Spanish Pals DCIberia
Bad google translation follows:
Our guru developing Dreamcast Chui has commented on the forums:
I think it would be good if we had the help of pSX source emulator: http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com
On this great emulator for Windows and Linux, but is not available source, because not know why.
Could we ask all of us to share in their forums such source porting pSX to Dreamcast, GP2X? http://psxemulator.proboards54.com
I have always believed in these cases that a request often fall on deaf ears but about 100 always draws attention at least.
Come apoyad and dadnos ideas to bring to our request and mostremosle Chui all possible support, where the river sounds, water leads. You do not need to send them an e-mail, just have to post in the comments or forums to express your support and we will send an e-mail to all official support to the initiative, however, anyone who wants to deliver an e - mail to the programmers are also welcome.
Do not forget to bring your initiatives and comments and read the original text on the forums. We have also opened a thread in the forums Dreamcast EOL.
It is important that posteen for the record your support publicly and what we teach.
Chui have our full support, let's see what we can do.
Greetings psxemulator Team.
I am a developer from the dreamcast scene and all the community would like to see a port of this emulator on Dreamcast as well as gp2x,
We would be the ones who would port this, as people would like to see a psx emulator working on these consoles but for that we would need the source code which has not been released before, by this I do not mean you should release this open to the public but at least to us developers in order to make a port ofthis to other systems rather than windows or linux possible.
We would appreciate if you consider that, thanks in advance and please reply soon.
Greetings
Email Neoblast's team psxemulator team, you can use that as an example or as an idea to send them but the important thing is to see that there is movement of people

Giana's Return team has updated their blog again. They informed us about bugfixes and they also said that they have created a group called "Giana's Return" on the German social network "StudiVZ" ("meinVZ"). You can talk to the beta testers there. To all Germans here: Join this group.
Today we thought to keep you updated about the ongoing bugfixes and
improvements.
*First of all we have extended the time limit from 99 seconds per level to 120
seconds. A bunch of people who were able to play a preview complained about
“lack of time” as they prefer exploring levels and collecting as many items as
possible. Those 120 seconds should be now really more than enough for
everyone, even for “explorers” and “diamond collectors”.
*We have two types of wall bricking now. As you know if Giana has her curly
hairstyle she can destroy bricks - depending on her power there are two ways
the brick disappears. If you have the energy-ball and you are bricking a wall,
the brick get’s dissolved. As soon as you get stronger and have shooting
ability, your “energy” level raises too and if you destroy a brick it splits
into 4 parts as you know it from the preview videos. This is more like an eye
candy and grant at least a little bit of difference during gameplay.
*Here comes something we have shameless stolen from “Super Mario” If you
destroy a brick, you will get one extra score. This might be not a lot, but
the main goal is not to destroy as many bricks as possible. Maybe as soon as
the game is out some ppl might be worried about “who has the highest” score,
so adding this ability to bricks, will be an important factor for score
hunters. One point might be not a lot, but see everything in bigger
dimensions. We might raise the amount of points you get from 1 to 5 or 10, but
we are pretty unsure about that. After all you get 50 points just for
squeezing an regular enemy
*The whole intro stuff is done - Credits, a “special inspriation screen”,
language selection and then it goes over to the titlescreen from where you can
start the game - just finetuning left there.
Last but not least, our coder fixed something which is of internal matter, the
test mode shows everything animated now - which is a lot more comfortable when
testing things

March 26th, 2008, 23:43 Posted By: wraggster
The homebrew community over the years has had its fair share of fun and site wars including PS2 Newz vs PS2 Ownz and Tehskeen Vs MaX-console, DCEmu vs QJ and DCEmulation vs Consolevision all quite vocal on all sides and from a neutral standpoint rather funny i suppose.
But now the homebrew scene enters a new era with one site split down the middle with a battle between DCEmulation.Org (The Admins, Staff and Coders) vs DCEmulation.Com (Webmaster and Various Members)
The battle may be on the Dreamcast Communitys turf but its interesting to all homebrew fans to see how things progress.
On one side you have the webmaster who created DCEmulation and although used some rather shady tactics ie naughty roms, fake News did actually create a very good Dreamcast Site and Community which at its time was one of the very best anywhere with so many great staff and coders, sadly most have moved on now. Now for the Negative about the Webmaster, for years and thats at least 3 years he has had little to no time spent on DCEmulation and thats where the breakaway group came in, the group of admins, staff and coders have worked on the site for the last 3 years rebuilding it all.
There are rights and wrongs on both sides and to be honest if your not going to work on a site then maybe you should pass the site over to others, i myself did this with DCEvolution and i knew it was in better hands than i could manage at that time. A good webmaster will do that but on the other hand the webmaster created the site and the final word lies with him.
Now this brings me to the present day last week the database and site were moved to a new domain ie DCEmulation.Org and the old site on .com deleted but 007 Cheater responded by reinstalling the database and the site at DCEmulation.Com.
At this time you have 2 sides both who are very strong in their beliefs, i do not know the legalities of it all but it makes for one of the most interesting site wars for a long time, will either side prevail, that i dont know, myself i favour the breakaway .org folks because they have the scenes interest at heart but was it a good idea to move the forum database/site without asking, im sure it wasnt.
Digg This
More info on this in these newsposts
DCEmulation.org - Official Statement
About dcemulation.com
DCEmulation.com is now DCEmulation.org
I must stress to all that DCEmu UK has nothing to do with any of the actions going off at DCEmulation but some of our staff are staff there so its very much of interest to us here and the Worldwide Homebrew Community at large.
I am happy for anyone to discuss the merits from both sides of the argument and hopefully the issue can be resolved as quick as possible.

Lets get back to homebrew news instead of site politics,
Manoel posted a new version of his Quake Mod for the Dreamcast:
1.3 version changes:

- Rewrote most of the PC controller code and added support for a second controller.
- Enabled the second controller on the Dreamcast version.
- Implemented savegame deletion by pressing backspace, delete, button 4 on the PC controller, or X on the DC controller.
- Done some changes to EF_SHADOW.
- Implemented EF_CELSHADING.

Those users who are coming to our Dreamcast Site must wonder if DC News is affected by the goings off at DCEmulation, i can reassure that we are nothing to do with it and this site is fine, im sure all fans of the Dreamcast community are hoping that DCemulation sorts out its internal problems sooner rather than later. The last month or so in the DReamcast scene have been the best for a long while mainly thanks to our spanish friends at dciberia.
remember to keep checking on http://dreamcast.dcemu.co.uk/ for the latest Dreamcast Community news

To all the members here at dcemu.co.uk, if you were ever a member at dcemulation.com, this applies to you.
Recently, dcemulation.com was moved to dcemulation.org, as reported here the other day. Well, recently dcemulation.com had a new forum spring up on it. This forum is a fraudulent copy of that on dcemulation.org. Somehow the owner of dcemulation.com managed to get a copy of the database from dcemulation.org. Anyway, if you have any private messages at the old dcemulation.com, I would encourage you to delete them ASAP. Also, to all developers here, if you have ever posted about releases at dcemulation.com, I would encourage you to go to your release posts there and delete them (possibly changing them to a post asking the users to go to dcemulation .org for the news (you must put a space in there, there is a wordfilter against dcemulation.org)).
The new staff at dcemulation.com has already decided to permanently ban me from their site. I suspect that other unfair permanent bans will follow, but the Dreamcast community must stick together through this.
Remember, if you are looking for the old DCEmulation website, it can now be found in its entirety at dcemulation.org.

dknute gave us an update about what's going on with the Sega Dreamcast emulator for PC.
Info from the official website:
I knew there was a good reason for not touching the GD-ROM code. But I did, and as it stands now it's pretty broken - I will need to redesign it quite a bit.
There are several major problems to solve, all tied to multithreading. Unfortunately I don't really know how to fix them. Or rather, I do, just haven't come up with an idea I feel like implementing. I'd rather spend some time thinking about it and do it right (well, mostly) than throw a ton of nasty patches in. I might actually have to pull out a drawing block, some pencils, and start designing it on paper first. This is a bit new to me, not being able to easily cover for all possible cases in my head. I guess that's MT for you...
I hope to release something in the first week of April. If the new GD code is not ready by then, I'll revert to the old one. I want to see if vibration works for other people too. By the way, I haven't done a single thing during holidays I blame Knurek. And Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call he told me about. But mostly Knurek.
