Tonight i finally got a chance to review the GP2X for those that dont know its the successor to the very successful GP32 (which has a great emu/homebrew scene), the console has dual 200mhz cpus, 64 Megs ram and a whole host of features and being Open Source and Linux Based it appeals to masses of developers. Heres my review (shortish but straight to the point) of the console.
Heres an excerpt:
"Well first a tried a normal avi file and it wasnt supported, but in future i should read whats supported :P, next i tried a xvid of the latest Harry Potter film and the fact that i didnt have to encode was excellent, and the playback for me was perfect, infact on that point alone i was sold, the picture and sound quality were spot on, the list of features like fast forward etc were there as you would expect
Games and Emulators
This is the big area and if you look at any of the decent GP2X Sites youll see that theres been a mass of great game ports and emulators released for the GP2X, the buttons felt right and the joystick too, i can honestly say that the GP2X was spot on although at 3am i couldnt turn the sound down in a Tetris game i was playing but that was more than likely the game not having the controls coded in."

I´ve coded a simple tool to convert Dreamcast savegames between Nexus .DCI format and .VMI/.VMS format.
I know there are other tools to do this same job, but I think this is the first tool to handle both-way conversions (DCI <-> VMI/VMS) without any other parameter than source file (a DCI or VMI file) and destination file (for .DCI target) or resource name (for .VMI/VMS target).
Check this page http://www.bucanero.com.ar/verpost.php?id_noticia=181 for more info and download links.
Win32 binary, Linux binary and source code are now available.
Please test this tool and post your comments.
Merry Xmas & happy hollidays!

Some interesting news for Dreamcast Owners from Insert Credit:
Two new(ish) trailers have been released by different companies, pointed out to me by Omegadog on the MMC. First up, there's a trailer for Age of the Beast (PC, DC, PS2, likely GP2X, Xbox). This is from Team Senile, who created Beats of Rage. AotB is a new game (and engine) created to be portable like the first, but with greater flexibility, and with a much wider array of abilities. Check the FAQ for more details on that aspect.
Next, there's EerieVale, a very long in development Jaguar game, which is now also coming to Windows, Linux, Mac, and naturally the Dreamcast. It's a D-like game (CG horror point and click) developed in Germany by a young fellow named Lars Hannig. Looks like the game's getting much nearer to completion - check the goofy trailer in the downloads section. Don't sit on that toilet!

News from Lik Sang
Celebrate your Dreamcast's 7th Christmas with a new title from GOAT Publishing, Cool Herders. A fast paced puzzle party game, players use elite powers to grab the most sheep! 4 player interaction and special powers let you either herd them yourself, or bash your opponent and steal theirs! On top of that, story mode puts you in the shoes of Zeus, a New Zealander far away from his homeland as he tries to get his herd back from the evil clutches of Iskur. This plays out across six worlds with three stages each (plus secret worlds!), and after that you can try a complete second mission mode with increased difficulty.
What began life as a demo on the fan made 'DC Tonic' disc, was so popular the developers went hard out on all new graphics, a full soundtrack with over a dozen tunes, six characters plus more to unlock, unlockable special modes and plenty of secrets still to come! Compatible with all the 'MIL-CD' Dreamcast units (generally all manufactured Oct 2000 and earlier), it'll work on an NTSC or PAL console, or through a VGA Box. At only US$ 19.90 and in stock now, dust off your Dreamcast and invite the mates over for a bit of fun with your sheep.

Moondoggie1968 has released a port of Fall Down (he doesn't state out which "Fall Down" exactly). This is what he said:
Here's a quick and dirty port I did tonight, this is a great game and thought I'd share for those of you who have a dreamcast.
Been playing this game on PC emulators for a while and it's always great. Turns out it works great on the Dreamcast Atari Emulator too, although there is some lag the faster the game gets but worth a look.
looking forward to playing this great game on some real hardware real soon once I get my eprom burning station going.

News from C&VG
<blockquote>Many thanks to Andrew Steele who has emailed us in a full translation of the Sega Direct webpage in question. The Dreamcast consoles for sale are indeed repaired and refurbished units that have been returned to Sega by customers. "The set that once cost 15,540 yen (including tax), has dropped to 10,000 yen (including tax)! If purchased as a stand alone unit, the price gets even better; 5,540 yen a unit!", Sega declares.
The company says that the machines function fine, although anyone purchasing one should expect the likes of scratches on the casing. The consoles are only available to Japanese punters, and it's a one-console-per-person deal and they can only be purchased through Sega Direct: ". We ask that you register with Sega Direct in order to purchase the machines. And we must also inform you that the number of units is limited, and so may sell out quickly."
Here's more from Andrew Steele's transcription/email:
Please take the time to read and understand the important points listed below.
What is the DC Resale?
We at Sega, have taken the Dreamcast units returned to us by customers, repaired them and refurbished them to a working state. The new units differ in no way to brand new machines.
Please be aware that, although these units no function as brand new machines, they still bare a little external damage in the form of scratches and other imperfections.
The DC Resale will be conducted through Sega Direct. We ask that you register with Sega Direct in order to purchase the machines. And we must also inform you that the number of units is limited, and so may sell out quickly.
About making a purchase
To Sega Direct customers,
Only those currently residing in Japan are eligible to purchase the machines
Point of importance:
Sales are limited to 1 unit per person.
Resale of the units is prohibited.
The repair and maintenance service for the resold units will expire on 31st March 2007 (The same length of time as the original units)
These machines are NOT compatible with MIL CDs.
About malfunctions:
If the machine malfunctions within 2 weeks of purchase:
Although we have taken great care to ensure that all machines function normally, in the unlikely event of a problem, please contact the Sega Direct Customer Centre within 2 weeks of purchasing the unit and we will endeavour to replace the machine. (Replacement machines are also resale models)
If the machine malfunctions after 2 weeks:
If the machine has been used correctly according to the included instruction manual, and is still within the guarantee period (within a year of the initial purchase), please send it, along with the guarantee form, to the customer service centre. We will repair the unit free of charge.
We cannot replace the machine with a new one.
++ UPDATE ENDS ++
Well, there you go. If you've read the rumour previous to this latest news and got a bit excited, sit down and drink grandma's large sherry. It'll make you feel much better. And finally, we can't bugger off without declaring that Sega's Dreamcast was a great console with some equally great games. Sadly, it only ever managed to live in PlayStation's shadow. It deserved better.</blockquote>
So it doesnt look like those bundles are good for Homebrew Dreamcast fans

Using Chui's work with the MMU, and using ported mips r4300i and RCP cores from x86 to SH4,so far Nincast64 runs N64 roms of up to a maximum of 32Mb and runs at max of 12FPS without sound (it appears from the screenshots that Mario runs between 6-8fps)
